D.C. Area Babies

Are apartments quieter out there?

I've never been in a "big city" apartment and I wont get to see the place we move to until we actually move (military).

I'm looking through the Apartment  Showcase book and the apartments make me nervous. Here, they're not well built in the sense that you can hear everyone walking, running, yelling and doing their laundry. Are they better built out there or are we SOL on that front?

Re: Are apartments quieter out there?

  • I think it has to do with when they were built. I think older places are generally quieter than some of the new places.

  • In which area are you looking? There are definitely quieter areas that you can choose depending on which base your H is stationed at...

  • There's noise from your neighbors and then there's street noise.  For the neighbors, try to get a top floor so you don't have to hear someone walking above you.  For street noise, that really depends on the area and which side of the building you're on.

We're looking at the Silver Spring area. DH will be out at the new Walter Reed building in Bethesda so we wont be on a base.

  • In the Silver Spring area (which is huge) you might be able to rent a house or townhouse for a price close to that of an apartment.

Feel free to run specific apartments/locations by us - we might be able to offer an opinion of the neighborhood.  Since SS is big, there are some parts that are better than others.

    Thanks!

I requested the Apartment Showcase book and we've made a small list of what fits our needs. (Cats, W/D in apt, 2-3br, near metro)

    Aveentine
    Berkshire Apartments
    Woodleaf Apartments
Strathmore House Apartments (DH's favorite layout)
    Westchester West

The Blairs (Not sure which one we like of those the best, probably The Towns)
