Today is rough day at work: I have a stack of student papers a mile deep to grade. You can help provide me with a distraction by suggesting your favorite quirky/traditional boy names for my future hypothetical son! I have a girl name list that looks like a phone book, but I like very few boys' names and love none. I'm open to any and all suggestions.
Here are some names I like (along with the reasons keeping me from loving them):
Asa/Amos/Amasa: I love this short A names from the Bible, but they are too matchy w/ DD's name (Amalia).
Carlo: The name of a very close cousin. It would be weird in our family context to use this name.
Leo: probably my favorite at the moment, seems a bit incomplete
Walter: love nn Walt! DH not on board, but DH's mn is Walton, so I might be able to use that instead
Arthur: Consensus on this board was that siblings Arthur and Molly (in a red-headed family) was just too much Harry Potter
Conrad: DH's grandfather's name. Initially, I thought it was too harsh, but it's growing on me.
Phineas: Classical names appeal to me, I'm just not sure we're cool enough to pull them off.
Peter: Love! But it's DH's name, and we don't want a Jr.
Others on my radar: Julian, Frederick, Theodore, Barrett, Oliver, Charles, Saul, Matteo. I've played around on Nymbler, but need some suggestions from creative people here. I am not opposed to going more "out there" than these names ? Kepler, Octavian, Horatio, Benedict, etc. I just need an infusion of new ideas!
Re: Bring Out Your Quirky Traditional Boy Names!
Theodore, Simon, Phillip...along the lines of Peter I think
I am really liking the name Brooks lately. I think it fits your criteria of quirky/traditional. The main complaint it gets on these boards is that it comes off as preppy (not necessarily a bad thing IMO).
I also love Leo and don't think it is incomplete. I have a nephew named Leo. I would have loved to use the name if my sister hadn't already (it was my grandfather's name).
Off the top of my head:
Blaise (as in Blaise Pascal or St. Blaise)
Ignatius (my grandfather's name - also a Saint)
Jude
Piers (older version of Peter)
Simeon
Otis
Forest
Basil
Ephram
Lawrence
George & Frederick (but you could have the Harry Potter thing going there too, I suppose)
Franklin
Linus
Edwin
Desmond
Lewis/Louis
Abraham
Everett
Brennan
I like August and Ignatius ? Gus is a great nn and could work for either.
Linus and Simon are good, too. DH has a gggrandfather named Linus, so I could defend it on those grounds, too.
Love Ephraim. It might sound too Bible-y for us, but I like it.
