My 5 y/o is in dance. She is usually back stage with a volunteer to help out backstage and also the older kids help out with the younger. I honestly don't keep her occupied. I sit back and enjoy the show and take still photos. MH does the video camera.
My 3 y/o is usually content to watch but we bring snacks and will bring the IPad for him.
My DD started balled a little before she turned 3. In her school the younger kids have their recital at the school just one class at a time. It's nice because they get to be comfortable and be the center of attention and then go hom.e
DD is 3.5 - she has to be backstage with her class -- along with all the other classes and showgroups for the duration of the recital - both nights - DH is unable to come and stay at the shows (he works shift work) but will see her performance and I will be backstage with 7 little 3.5 year olds -- other volunteers will be there.
I am slightly overwhelmed with all the chaos -- it was insane just getting pictures done!!! But DD enjoys watching people -- they suggested coloring books, some snacks, and a portable DVD player if they have one.
In my dds' class there are 20 girls. The director hung up sign up sheets for backstage moms. If you do you get to watch your child each time they go on (3xs total) and sit in the front row! We have 6 moms for back stage so we are only responsible for about 3-4 girls each. The back stage mom is usually the one who brings things to occupy her girls.
They recommended coloring books and CRAYONS only! NO markers that could draw on costumes and hands before they go on stage. Portable DVD players, blankets for them to sit on instead of at the table. (we do ours at a local high school and the girls stay in the cafeteria during the recital) They also break up the recital so that not all the classes preform the same night. Mine did better than I thought last year at 3 almost 4yrs old. I didnt help backstage because it was their first year. I wanted to watch the whole recital. Im taking the water capri suns, crackers, un buttered popcorn, etc (dry snacks that dont crumble too badly or have anyway of staining costumes) I dont have a dvd player but Im taking my laptop to let them watch movies on. My 2 will also take turns playing with my phone and their Leapfrog Explorers.
They way they line them up 4 routines ahead of time there really isnt a whole lot of free time between changing costumes (they have 3 complete costumes so 2 full changes), running to the potty and redoing makeup (lipstick) They have 1 on stage, 1 ready to go, 1 in the hall and 1 in the cafeteria lined up. They spend a lot of their time standing still quietly in a line. (or sitting for the younger ones)
Im also printing off 2 ballerina coloring sheets per child and taking each a $$ tree box of crayons just to make sure everyone has something to color.
