Baby Names

I think I am starting to really like "Carina"

I wanted an Italian name because I am 100% Italian and my married name is anythign but Italian...Carina means little dear in Italian.

Thoughts on Carina Loraine (Loraine is my mom's name)??

Are there any weird nicknames that could arise from it? I am always thinking I like names and then cringe at the thought of a nickname that she'll probably end up being called.

I think Carina is really pretty. The only nicknames I can think of are "Cari" and "Rina". As far as derogatory nicknames.... kids can make one out of ANY name, so don't waste you time trying to figure it out!
  • My friend's DD is Carina, and I think it's a sweet name that will grow well with her. (Her last name is also Italian.)

It's not one of those names that a shortened nickname would be inevitable. There isn't an obvious nickname attached to it, at least.

  • That's basically my sister's name (although my parents spelled it Corinna) - I guess there's a slight difference in pronunciation.  She's gone by Cori her whole life - I would guess that Carina could/would be shortened to Cari.

I know derogatory nicknames are impossible to figure out -  I mean, I liked Juliana but I really do not like the nickname Jules for some reason and I feel like that may be inevitable?

  • Will you pronounce it Ca-ree-na? or Ca-rin-na? I think that will make a difference too.

     Ca-ree-na

  • I like Carina! I also have Lorraine (spelled this way) on my long list.

I think Carina Loraine flows nicely, especially because a 3-2 syllable count is my favorite.

I knew a Karina all through school, and never heard any weird nicknames or teasing of her name.

  • I like Carina also, and I think Carina Loraine sounds really nice.  Some nns I could see coming from Carina...Cari, Cara, Rina, Rini, Nina....

My cousin is Karina and she doesn't have a nickname. I think it's a beautiful name!
  • I like Corrina, spelled this way.  I guess it is pronounced more like Core-een-ah than Cah-reen-ah though.

    NN could be Cori/Corey.

  • This name is actually in our family. It's pretty but it does sort of remind me of the verb "careen" (as in to dangerously and rapidly move... ie "She careened around the corner in her new sports car"). That said, our Carina never got teased and never received a nn with the exception of occasionally being called Rina.

Exactly what she said :) Love the whole name!

I love Carina - though I may be biased as I've had 2 Karinas as students and they were wonderful girls!  They both pronounced it with a more Hispanic pronunciation, Kar-een-ya (like you would pronounce it with the ~), but I think any pronunciation is lovely.
  • I think it sounds nice, although I prefer the spelling/pronunciation of Corrina or Corinna better. I definitely think it goes well with the mn you chose.
