Cholestasis of pregnancy?

My OB is testing me for cholestasis of pregnancy because my entire body has been really itchy and it's driving me crazy.  I wish that lab tests were instant!  I should not have googled what cholestasis is- I have almost all of the symptoms, and my itching is consistent with the descriptions I am reading, it's not like itching from dry skin or from a rash.  The rational me says that doesn't mean anything, but irrational me is taking over right now. I'm going to drive myself crazy until I get my results. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • No experience here, but I remember reading about it when I had some bad itching in my second trimester.  I mentioned it to my doctor and he didn't think I had it because the symtoms usually appear in the 3rd trimester.  Someone posted something about it last week on the 3rd trimester board.  You might want to ask there.  I hope you don't have it, but if you do, the good thing is that you know you have it and you can be monitored and I;m sure you and the baby will be fine.

A girl named Gabbeyh is dealing with it.

You can page her on SAIF (Success After IF). She could have been the one to post on 3rd tri as well since she is also in her 3rd tri.

  • Ugh, that sucks but I'm glad your dr is aware and testing for it.  My older sister had this with her pregnancies, and it could run in families so I'm on high alert.

My non-dr understanding of it, is that it made her body produce extra fluids to try to combat the extra acids (that cause the itchiness), so she got pretty puffy.  She had a very sad outcome with her first pregnancy, suddenly losing her first baby about a month before he was due which they believe was from complications from undiagnosed cholestasis. My sister went on to have 2 healthy beautiful boys after that, with diagnosed cholestatsis in those pregnancies, so I don't mean to frighten you!!!  With proper dr care, please don't worry.

I hope you find some relief from the itching in the meantime.
