Is my <2y/o giving up his nap?

In the past 2-2.5 weeks, DS has only napped four times.  The first few times he skipped it, he was plenty cranky and went to bed way early (like head on the pillow, asleep by 6pm as opposed to getting in his crib around 7:30ish and talking himself to sleep for 15-20 minutes).  But since then he's been fine and happy thoughout the rest of the afternoon, and going to bed around 6:30-6:45ish.  There's no way he is giving up his nap already??

  • DD is almost 26 months and does not take a nap anymore.  My sister watches her and claims that she doesn't nap anymore b/c she's having too much fun with her.  If we stay home on Mondays (my off day) & Saturdays she will sometimes take a nap but I kind of like when she doesn't b/c she goes to bed by 8:30 & I have a nice relaxing evening for myself.

  • co- at least I won't have to rush home from the pumpkin patch so he can take a nap, right? ;)

  • Exactly.  That said, Benjamin is still awake, too, so we could make it a long day.  :)

Or at least plan a picnic there or something.

  • A picnic actually sounds perfect- I was going to ask you if we should bring one.  Can you email me the link; I can't find it anymore on FB.

  • Others will disagree, but I say it's too young.

I think right around two is a classic time to go through some nap strikes, though. Ethan did and I wondered the same exact thing, but on the advice of other moms, I rode it out and looking back it's laughable I thought he was done. He was nowhere near ready. In fact, he STILL needs a nap now -- at 4! He officially gave it up at 3 1/2, though.

  • Thanks Sulla, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear!  How long did this nap strike go on?

  • This is late, but a friend's ped just recently told her that at 2 there's no way they're giving up naps.  It's a stage and will pass.  She said that you just have to force him to either nap or at least have an hour or so of down time where he's lying down quietly reading or playing.  She said that closer to 4 is when naps should truly begin being weaned.
