Cloth Diapering

Ammonia/pee help

So some of our o/n fitteds are starting to get an ammonia smell and the hemp inserts and some other natural fabric diapers that aren't being used o/n are getting pee stains on them, did his pee just all of a sudden become super concentrated? I know I've seen ammonia ?s asked before but I've never had a problem so I've never looked at the answers so now here I am asking what do you do? Also when I pulled some of the stained inserts and diapers out of the wash today they still smelled a little funny so now I have all of our diapers rocking a soak. So I guess what do I do now or has anyone had this problem? How do you soak your diapers? oxi clean (would that help)? Thanks ladies!

  • I had that problem with RnG. I switched to tide and no problems. I also add a little vinegar to the rinse.

  • What detergent are you using?  What is your wash routine?

The only way I got rid of ammonia was to do a long hot water soak with a jug of vinegar (gallon) and a scoop of Oxyclean and let it soak in hot water for at least 6 hours.  Watch out b/c it bubbles and smells but it will work. I then followed up with a couple hot water rinses.

  • I've been trying to rid our overnnight diapers for awhile now but haven't had much luck.  I finally swtiched from RnG to Thirsties detergent hoping that will do the trick!

A few of the things I tried that others said worked were an overnnight soak with baking soda and then adding vinegar to the rinse.  Rocking a soak in RNG overnnight.  Buying Funk Rock.

Good luck!  Ammonica can be a real PITA!

I have heard of so many people having stink or ammonia issues with RnG.  And most of these people had no issues with their diapers before.  I guess they're just not getting them as clean?

  • I was using RnG but switched to Vaska and it has been working great but now for some reason I'm having some issues. Its not bad but its there and I don't want it to get worse. I also don't understand the pee stains, its like brownish/purplish color staind and its on all the natural fiber diapers :/ I still have some RnG and thought I'd try doing a soak and I will also try the vinegar. Right now my wash routine is cold rinse, hot/cold wash with detergent with extra cold rinse followed by another rinse. I have had to play around with how much of the Vaska to use so maybe I'm not using enough?

I would try tide but DS has sensitive skin and I'm sure Tide would not work with him.

This is exactly what I do. It has really helped especially with BG inserts. They're the worst!
