For boys, I like/prefer simple classic names. When I was PG with #1, we decided on Daniel before realizing it was in the top 10. We loved the name so we used it anyway.
Now this time, we are having another boy. The only name we could agree on was Alexander. And once again after finally agreeing on a name, I realize it was in the top 10 last year.
With all these people saying these creative spellings and -ayden names being so popular, why are so many simple and classic names in the top 10.
We're sticking with Alexander...I've always liked that name and we did consider it when I was PG with #1(we took it off our list because I knew another friend who was PG at the same time had said many times before she got PG she loved the name. I didn't want to step on her toes even though I know she didn't "own" the name.) I just wish that once again we didn't pick a name that is apparently extremely popular. I guess we should have learned our lesson and consulted the lists BEFORE picking out a name.
Re: why are the boy names I like always in the top 10? :(
You don't regret choosing Daniel do you? There's no reason to, nor should you feel dumb for choosing Alexander. That's the problem with being overly worried about popularity... no one know what's going to be popular in five years. Just choose a name you love and stick with it. Classic names rock!
My post above might help you feel better about it.

Yes, I still love Daniel and don't regret naming him that. And we plan on still using Alexander. I've loved that name ever since I was a kid watching Family Ties.
It just makes me wonder if I've doomed my kids to being Daniel or Alexander C. once they are in school. Also when I see people flipping out because a name they like moved all the way up to the top 500, I start second guessing myself a little.
Oh well. I'm not going change my mind especially since we had a hard time agreeing on a name(DH likes to use nicknames and I don't like most of the nicknames for boy name..I like Michael but I don't like Mike. I like Matthew but not Matt, etc. Daniel/Danny/Dan and Alexander/Alex were really the only names that I liked the nicknames as much as the full names)
Some names are popular for a very good reason -- because they're classic names that appeal to people from many different walks of life. Daniel (nn. Danny) is one of my all time faves and Alexander is wonderful too.
They're classic, not "trendy". They'll never seem dated like today's trendy names will.
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

I love the name Alexander (was on our short list for DS and will probably be there again if we ever have another boy). I think there's a difference between names being top 10 that are trendy and names (like Alexander and Daniel) that are classics.
I always said I didn't want an uber-popular name for my children, but DS's name (Joseph) is #20. Does it bother me that it's that popular? A little, but it has always been in the top 20 and it's a timeless name that has family origins and will age well with him and I do not regret naming him it one bit.
