SER: Nursing Clothing

For those moms who BF how much actual nursing clothing, if any, did you buy?  I have 1 nursing bra and 1 tank top and will send my mom out to buy me more once my milk comes in and I know the size I need better.  Beyond that, is it really necessary to have special shirts, nightgowns, etc...?  I want to be comfortable and not fumbling around but also don't want to spend a ton of unnecessary money.  I usually sleep in yoga pants and a big t-shirt and it seems like I should be able to lift the t-shirt to BF or just switch to wearing a nursing tank at night for easier access.  All these last minute decisions...

Re: SER: Nursing Clothing

  • I wore a nursing tank or bra to bed every night. That's all I had for nursing. I also wore a lot of button up shirts and zip up sweatshirts. HTH!

  • I bought a handful of shirts and one nightgown (the nightgown is actually a maternity dress from the Gap, lol). They were really really handy in the beginning when she was eating all the time and I was NIP a lot. Now I still wear them but they aren't as necessary. When I want to buy a new shirt I do check out the nursing tops available first because it's a nice convenience, but I can do without. One of the reasons I liked nursing tops was that they covered my PP belly though!
  • I had a nursing bra and one nursing tank (I didn't care for it--it was Motherhood Maternity and very thick. Not so great for layering, but good while I was home). I also had one top, but it was because it matched a skirt for a wedding.

What I ended up doing was wearing a cami that was stretchy in that area, and layering it under shirts. So pull the shirt up, the cami down, and there you go. It also kept my tummy covered while allowing pretty easy access.

  • I have two nursing bras which I sleep in (nine months into BFing, I still leak at night!).  Other than that, I just wear a regular, wireless bra and flip it down, or up, depending on the shirt.

  • I second the nursing tanks - I love my Gillian O'Malley tanks from Target.  I have two and wish I had more - I use them all the time.  Like pp said, it's easy to layer one with another shirt then you can pull the shirt up and tank down and not be exposed.  You could also do this with a regular cami and nursing bra but I think it's easier with the nursing tank.
  • I had a couple of Target nursing tanks, a few soft cup bras, and 2 sleep bras for the beginning. ?At 2 months, I bought 2 underwire nursing bras once my supply regulated. ?Besides that, I just used regular shirts, camis, and cardigans to nurse in and still do :)

  • I have two nursing tanks and two nursing bras.  Other than that I didn't buy any special clothing.
  • Another vote for the Target nursing tanks.  I had a couple of nursing bras, nursing tops and nursing tanks.  I ended up using the nursing tanks daily and rarely, if ever, used the rest.

I have 4 nursing tanks and I will be getting more for the next baby.  It would be really nice to have 7 - I per day, if you could swing it.

I would layer a nursing tank under a regular shirt so I could nurse discreetly in public.

  • Thank you all!  You confirmed what I thought.  And the tank I have already is a Target one so glad to hear that it should work well.  Smile

  • I bought 3 nursing tanks from Target (they were reasonably priced but only come in black, grey, and white). I also have 2 nursing bras. And that's it. Of course I don't really nurse DD in public (I work, and I always make sure she's fed before we go out) so that may make a difference.

  • Ohh, I lied, I also have 2 sleep nursing bras. I really like those and the tanks for around the house.
