Thought this was interesting to here from someone close to the industry.
suzyq is correct with regards to FDA. There are a few private banks within my district and we have not inspected these facilities. The area of biologics is a heavily regulated industry so we usually visit blood banks and related firms on a regular basis.

I want to donate but it stinks that my hospital doesnt participate!!!
anyone know how I can still donate? I think it ashame to waste the cord blood.
You could not "waste" it and give it to your own child... A lot of people dont realize that in order to bank/donate cord blood the dr needs to clamp the cord right away instead of allowing the cord to finish pulsating which actually stops the blood flow from the placenta to your baby. There is research evidence proving that waiting until the cord stops pulsating is beneficial to your baby. Something to think about...

We are planning on doing this to an extent. We want to delay clamping for about a minute or two if possible.
ITA with this. Let it stop pulsing before cutting off the supply to your baby. When we were planning a hospital birth I hadn't looked into this as much and had every intention of donating it if our hospital had a program to. But, after doing the research I'm very glad I now know about the benefits of letting our LO get that blood.
This isn't true. There is PLENTY of blood in the cord after it stops pulsing. And as someone who has drawn cord blood out of a umbilical vessel, I can assure you that it's true.
I personally am donating to MD Anderson Cancer Center:
