Identical vs Fraternal?

I was told the whole time I was PG that  DDs were fraternal. Well my mom works in the L&D where I had DDs and she brings pictures all the time of DDs. The Neonatologist has been saying since they were about 2 mo old that they had to be identical. Well yesterday they read my pathology report of the placenta and they are thinking DDs are "Mirror Twins" b/c when I had them I only had one placenta; meaning that the two original placentas must have fused at some point early on. I have started to look it up, and it does make since. They have birth marks on opposite side of their back when they are face to face; it is difficult to tell them apart.

 Anyone ever heard of this?

What testing company did you use if you had genetic testing done?

Re: Identical vs Fraternal?

  • I have heard of mirror image twins. One would also be a righty and the other a lefty, so maybe watch for that too! How cool!

We used Affilated Genetics for our test. It was $160 and totally worth it. FWIW, I think people always guess identical- 9 times out of 10 we got identical and we were sure they were fraternal. Um, nope. They are identical-- d'oh! We had one placenta as well, but I too thought that it was just two giant ones that had fused. Nope again! There really was just one!

and a few more of these!!!!!! for good meaure Stick out tongue

  • we are thinking that maybe linus is a mirror to oliver and miles. i always figured he was one of the halves that split originally, and then the other half split to make oliver and miles. who knows. but his hair swirls in a different direction than the other two, and he looks less alike than them. hmmm... i guess we'll have to see, when they start writing!

  • I think many identical twins are mirror image.

It is possible to have one placenta with identical twins, they split after the placenta started to form, or it is possible to have two placentas fuse together.  If it really was one placenta, then they are definetly identical, if it was two placentas fused together than they could be identical or fraternal.

  • We used proactive genetics for ours- we thought they were fraternal, but they are identical.  My girls were di-di- so we had to test to find out for sure.  I think they are mirror image identicals though- we have one whose hair parts to the left, one to the right, one that favors her left hand, one the right, etc.  The testing was SO nice to  be able to know for sure- I would definitely recommend it!
  • I think that my DD's are mirror twins!  I have a crooked smile and the girls both have crooked smiles also- but on opposite sides!

  • This is kinda a pet project of mine.  My MIL are her sister are mirror twins, hair swirls and handedness are opposite. When I found out I was pg with mono-di twins I picked up the Barbara Luke book.  In one of the first few chapters she explains that mirror twins often form between 9-12 days after conception making them mono-mono twins. I just looked up and found the same information elsewhere.  I know there's a lot of info out there and it's all very confusing.  Just wanted to pass along what I had found out about mirror twins in my own research.
