s/o doctor poll - do your parents

know how to buckle/unbuckle a car seat, correctly?

My parents can do the buckles, but are scared to pull it tight enough.  And forget getting them out - not one of her seven grandparents can figure out how to loosen them, so the poor girls always get a limb pulled off trying to get out of the straps.

Re: s/o doctor poll - do your parents

  • I have to show them anytime they have the seat, but once they try it once, they figure it out.  Usually when they have them, they aren't driving around - it's more in case of an emergency.

My mom knows...  The other 3 grandparents don't..  However, they would never be alone with one or both of the kids, so it's a non-issue.

    This, but it's 2 grandparents (IL's).

  • Not even DH does it as well as I like. I inspect everyone's work when I'm with them. MIL probably does it best after me. My parents are like yours and don't want to strap her too tight. And like yours, I don't know how they all get DD out since they straps are barely loosened. They all know how but they just don't pull them out as much as I do. I have to loosened them more to get her in.

Our new carseat has a click to tell you there is enough tension so I looooves it. I tell them to make sure they hear a click. My parents have their own carseat in CA and I kinda wish we had gotten them a Britax instead of Recaro too now.

  • Yes, and I am very vocal about how my SIL and brother don't buckle their kids tight enough.  My niece who isn't even 4 is in a booster and it just doesn't seem right. I don't know the weight/height requirements for a booster, but it just seems like she should still be in a 5 point harness and not just a lap belt.

My dad has the kids the most and he doesn't loosen the straps, so I know they are tight enough. My mom and MIL would only be putting them into my car and I don't loosen E's straps anymore so she's good. I don't think they'd do S's straps tight enough though.

You are right, she shouldn't be in a booster. 4yr and 40lb is absolute minimum recommended, but most kids aren't mature enough to sit right and not mess with the seatbelt. But there's no law for it. And she should still have a full seatbelt on, not just a lap belt.

They went with the 40lb rule and not the 4 year.  She'll be 4 in June.  I just wish they did what was best for her safety and not for her comfort.  They think it's more comfy for her so that's why she's in the booster.  My opinion...get a bigger car seat and make her sit in it.

This is cool!  I would like this as well, as I feel like I am either reallly strapping him down too tight, or don't feel like it's tight enough if I loosen it.  This would take the guess work out - although, i am not sure how it "feels" for tension?  You said this is in a Britax?  I have a Recaro, so I don't have it.  Maybe I will look at Britax for the next purchase.

  • They all buckle him in just fine, but they never install it tight enough, even FIL.  I get IN the carseat myself (I put all my weight in it with my knee) so that sucker doesn't move a millimeter.  They just tighten the straps and think it's fine like that.  I've tried many times to get DH to show FIL that he needs to get it super tight, and I think he might now be better at it, but if I can I always install it in their car myself if they are taking him anywhere.
  • No.

  • I have to remind them to pull the straps tight.  ILs remember to losen them, but my mom and sister never remember.  I tell them every time...

Yes, it's the Boulevard CS. It has "Sure-click" or something like that.
