  • We didn't do the plastibell, but he seemed unfazed. My ob did it in the hospital and he was happy when they brought him back and never seemed To have any pain. Each time I changed his diaper I used petroleum and gauze and he never seemed tonmindvus cleaning it or changing the dressing.

  • DS has it done on day 3 at the hospital.  He was gone (I chose not to go with him) for 15 minutes and came back calm and "normal."  The doctor warned me that he may sleep a bit longer and he did.
  • It's two weeks later and he's completely healed and fine.  I was more traumatized than he was.

  • My OB did DS's and she used novacaine to numb the area. He came back and was perfectly fine. It looked really red and raw, but it did not seem to bother him. During every diaper change for 2 days we had to put petroleum jelly on gauze and put it on his penis. Then for the next 2 days, we just put petroleum jelly on the penis. The redness went away within a few days.

  • LO got his done on day #2 at the hospital.  He was a little sleepy for the rest of the day but didn't seem to mind the diaper changes.  The one most effected was DH - he took LO to the nursery for the procedure and had to leave in the middle of it!

Our little guy fell asleep during the procedure and his recovery was quick and easy. The Vaseline and gauze was a pain in the butt with diaper changes, but he was unfazed.

  • This 100%. I was a wreck, Jack was totally fine. He slept through the whole thing.

  • Our little guy got his done the second or third day after birth, and he seemed to take it well. Don't let anything fool you, it hurts them at the time... They pass out from the pain... Not fall asleep. I asked my Ped. about it, and that's what he told me.
But.... It's day 6 after birth and his circ looks nearly healed.
If you cuddle him as soon as he gets back, feed him, and just make him comfortable he'll be fine.
Oh and follow exactly what they tell you to do about the site.
  • You should listen carefully to your heart.

There is no reason to do this to your baby, and plenty of reasons not to.

There is a lot of support for you if you feel that you are being pressured to circumcise.

You can cancel the appointment and protect your baby.

A post I wrote about mothers and how circumcision hurts us too:

Circumcision is extremely painful to babies and it changes a man's body for the rest of his life. The glans is supposed to be an internal part of the body, protected by the foreskin. The foreskin itself contains many unique sensory structures which circumcision will destroy, changes also happen to the glans because after circumcision it is dry and exposed to abrasion with clothing. Respect your son's human rights to his whole body, respect your mother's instincts which are telling you to protect your baby.  He was born perfect, a precious treasure just the way he is.

DH went with DS and said he never cried or fell asleep. I nursed him right after then he napped. I was upset seeing the blood for the first day but it healed quickly and looks good now.
  • They took Alec to the nursery for the procedure and kept him there for about 45 minutes to make sure he was okay, and when he came back to me, he wasn't even fussy. He complained a little through the first couple of diaper changes afterward, when we'd change the gauze, but that's it. If he was in pain, he certainly never acted like it.

  • I don't think LO knew the difference.  We had it done in the hospital, and the nurses came and picked him up, put some numbing cream on him, and brought him back about an hour later - he was snoozing away and then woke up and ate.  He didn't even mind during diaper changes that we had to put Vaseline on him, and he was totally healed by day 7.

LO came back screaming and had actual tears coming down his face.  We will not be circ'ing again if we have boys in the future.  I'm still disappointed in myself for going through with the procedure.
  • Our pedi did the gomco so it's a little different, and DH went with him. He said DS started to cry when they straightened out his legs before anything started, but then stopped crying before they dud anything else and stayed quiet the whole time, even through injecting the local. The following 24 hours or so he was pretty fussy, but it wasn't horrible. He's doing great now.
  • LO was circumcised by my OB the day after he was born. He slept through the procedure. After they finished they gave him a dose of children's Tylenol. I could tell he was a bit uncomfortable after Tylenol wore off (aprox. 6 hours after) and DH and I have him another small dose and it hasn't been an issue ever since. The incision actually heals within 24 hours and then the new skin begins to grow. We have just stopped putting petroleum jelly on diaper and he is healing great.
