PT question: overnight heavy wetters

How should I start out with nights?  I am PTing Keira this week---starting Tuesday. She soaks an overnight diaper with CD cover every night. I know everyone says they get better with wetting at night when they are trained during the day, but what should I do WHILE training this week?

I want to throw all diapers "in the trash" (AKA hidden in Callie's closet for future use) and go straight to pull-ups at night for "nighttime undies". BUT I know she will soak right through one of those.

Do I put her in a pull-up anyway and then get her up at 11pm to pee right before I go to bed? Or do I do this method AFTER she is trained and really gets going? She has peed in the potty several times this past week before nap and bed time so she is starting to get it. I'm hoping by training this week it will really click for good.

I really don't want to be changing her bedding several times a night with her still in a pull-up. Kinda defeats the purpose. I mind as well have her in undies if she's peeing through a pull-up and getting wet, right?

  • We kept Eli in a diaper at night at first, he did fine with it and it didn't hinder his daytime training at all.  Then, we switched to pull ups when he started going less at night.  He still soaks through every now and then, and I've been told Goodnights hold more than pull ups, so you might try those.  Daytime training was pretty easy for him, but it's going to be awhile before we have him in underwear at night.

Limiting fluids, if you're not already, also helps alot.  And having him go several times before bedtime.  I have him go 3 or 4 times in the couple of hours leading up to bedtime.

  • We kept Liam in diapers overnight.  He's ready now for a pullup, in fact he wakes up most mornings dry, but we are just using up what we had left.  Liam was soaking Huggies Overnights before PTing, and I just knew a pullup would not hold him those first few nights.  The first couple of nights, it didn't seem like he peed any less at night, and I was wondering if I'd screwed up by using diapers, but by 2 weeks into PTing, he was waking up dry most mornings, so I really don't think diapers hurt us at all, and they DEFINITELY saved us a million middle of the night wet sheet changes.

  • They do make overnight Pull-ups--you could start with those. We did follow the 3 day thing to the "t" at first, including letting her sleep in undies. We changed sheets at least once most nights for the first week. So, we decided to switch to Pull-ups, which we're still using (although she wakes up dry probably 6 nights of the week, so soon maybe we'll phase them out... I've been saying that for weeks though. hehe).

Holly also soaked a Huggies overnight prior to PTing. I don't know what makes that change, but it did. Holly doesn't drink anything after dinner, and she always goes potty each night before getting in bed. We have never woken her up to go, but some people do.

    HTH--GL!

Kira is still in full-blown diapers overnight and I don't see that changing anytime soon.  I know little ones who are still in them for naps too, 4+ year olds, even if they're perfect while awake and have been for 1+ years.  'I'd just follow her lead and do what you need to do to make her successful when she's not in diapers, whenever that may be.  She's still super young and I wouldn't be surprised if she's not ready to tackle overnight, though you can wait and see how she adjusts. :)
