For those moms who have the ergo carrier, how necessary is it to have the infant insert? I want to use it right away, but not sure if I will need the insert or not. Does a blanket work just as well?
I can't imagine a blanket would work, because it provides a platform at the bottom, not only cushioning around the sides/back. Plus, stuffing a blanket in the carrier along with the baby just seems very unsafe. If you want to use it right away, I'd get the infant insert.
You can't use it without the insert until 4-5 months. I would not try to substitute anything for that insert as it would be unsafe. I prefer wrap type carriers, like the Moby, for newborns as they feel more secure and they give them the extra support they need. I would start with something like that and then switch to the Ergo rather than buying the infant insert. It's not that much more and it will probably work better for you and baby.

Get a 2nd hand moby for $20 to use for the first few months - cheaper than the infant insert and more secure (imo) and comfortable than the ergo with insert. I had both and vastly preferred the moby over the ergo infant insert.
I disagree! I used my Ergo without the insert no problem. Just bend baby's legs froggy style and put a blanket underneath. I also rolled a small blanket under LO's neck for support.
I didn't use my Ergo from newborn, I wanted her to learn to sleep on her own without being held and that went well...she was fine. We started using it around 2.5 mos and didn't need the infant insert... she was fine holding her head up and what not. You could just wait and feel it out when the baby comes.
I used my ergo with insert at 2 weeks. It is a little on the warm side, but I wouldn't have gone without it. I still use the pillow under her bum as she is still a peanut. I think you could use a blanket/towel to support, but that might be a little frustrating at first as you try to manage a carrier, baby, and loose blankets. Mine spent time in her carrier every day due to acid reflux.

We LOVED our infant insert - we couldn't have gone anywhere without it. It's absolutely necessary.
BTW - both DH & I were uninterested in wrap carriers.

I hated the insert. It was soooo bulky.

I have heard that a blanket works just as well. I imagine either the insert or the blanket would get really hot in the summer.
If you were going to spend more money on anything I would get the Moby instead of the insert. Just a personal preference though.
