Success after IF

Update on T&Ps for my brother's GF (edited)

She's doing great and they were able to save her ovary.  YAY!  I believe they were able to remove the cyst w/out much damage to her remaining ovary.  They are going to watch it carefully for a few weeks and then decide if she'll be able to "harvest" some eggs for the future, given her history.

I don't know if harvest is the right word, but that's what my brother was calling it.  He's just 19 and for his first time thinking about someone's ovary, I guess he's doing a good job interpreting!

I'm assuming they'd treat her similar to an IVF cycle and just freeze what they get from the ER?  There was a previous concern about OHSS and her ovary flipping or twisting w/ that giant cyst attached... and maybe feeding the cyst w/ the hormones, I guess.

I was just sick about her possibly losing her only ovary at such a young age.  So glad everything worked out for her.  Thanks to everyone who was thinking good thoughts for her yesterday.  You guys rock!

ETA: Just talked to her:  they didn't remove the cysts, they drained them.  To remove them they would have had to take her ovary.  Not sure what the plan is now...

  • That's good news - thanks for the update.  Hopefully they'll be able to freeze some eggs too.

There's a relatively new procedure called IVM (in vitro maturation) that they could likely use given the possibility of OHSS and the cyst. Basically they're retrieving the immature eggs and then maturing them outside the body before fertilization.

McGill has some decent info about it: https://www.mcgillivf.com/e/McGillIVF.asp?page=184.186.212

Thanks for the link!  I'll send to her.  That'd probably be a good option since the cysts were just drained, and not removed.
