I am planning on making my Mom this blanket as a gift:
https://www.aestheticnest.com/2010/08/sewing-heirloom-cut-chenille-baby.html
I had picked out fabric and showed my Mom what I had picked (thinking more of her taste than my own) and I was WAAAAY off the mark. She said it looked "old lady". LOL
Anyway, have any of you used a fun fabric that you loved that you think would work well for this?
I'm looking online but I'm having a hard time getting a feel for what it would look like in person and we don't have a ton of selection around here to view in person.
Re: Sewing ladies...Fabric help?
Noooooo....I'm making it as a gift. I showed her the fabric I purchased (did not tell her what it was for) just to see what she thought of it. I bought it because I thought she would like it and I totally missed the mark because she thought it was "old lady".
Ah, I get it. I got about 2 hours of sleep so I'm not operating at full potential today
Check out amy butler fabrics. They're fun.

I'm planning on making one for my sister for her shower too! What fabrics did you use?
I'm excited to tackle this project!
Michael Miller has adorable fabrics that (I think) would work great for kid's projects.

Those fabrics are straight out of the 60s and 70s, which is probably why she thinks that they are 'old lady'.
ETA: chenille is also extremely old ladyish. She's probably thinking of her mom's chenille bedspreads from the 40s and 50s.
Ask her what she DOES like.

For my DS, I used this one:

I am making one for my SIL's shower right now, and they are doing a winnie the pooh nursery (I know, not everyone's cup of tea), so I'm using this:

I'd love to make one with an adult fabric as well, but wanted to try something fun for my first try at it, so went with the sesame street for DS.
It's a fun blanket to make! Very time consuming, but turns out great. I would definitely recommend getting a specific cutter to make the chenille rows, trying to use scissors would take forever! I got the clover slash cutter and it worked great, and I think is cheaper than the one shown in the tutorial.
I am working on a faux chenille blanket right now using Valori Wells' Nest corduroy. I'm using pink, tan and light green for the cut fabrics. I plan to bind it with the blue bird fabric that matches.
Thanks for the help ladies!
JellymanKelly - I really like the idea of binding with a coordinating fabric. I was only thinking about a blanket binding or something similar and solid color.
