I put it on FB, but thought I'd post here as well. Carter had surgery late yesterday, and it went well. It took longer than expected as there was more fluid/puss in his lungs than they thought. They cleaned out quite a bit, and he has two tubes coming out of his chest right now to continue draining fluids. One will come out today or tomorrow, and the other will come out the next day. They are testing the fluids/bacteria so they can determine the best antibiotic approach for treatment.
As long as he has the chest tubes, he'll be in the ICU so they can keep a close eye on him. Once they're out, he'll probably be in the regular Pediatrics area of the hospital for another day or two, and then sent home. While he was under general anesthesia, they put in the long term IV that can last up to six weeks so he can continue to receive IV antibiotics at home (likely for 14 days after he is sent home).
He is definitely improving, although sad about being in the hospital and desperately wanting to go home which is a good sign. When we first checked in on Saturday, he was too sick to care about where he was. He did very well under the general anesthesia, and hasn't had any nausea from it wearing off.
I truly appreciate all of the good thoughts and prayers, and are so grateful for the support! It really means a lot to me to have so many people thinking about my little boy and praying for a quick recovery. So thank you!!
