My brother is coming home in June to get married. The wedding is really small and simple. Mom and I are planning the entire wedding as my brother and soon to be SIL (who I haven't met and won't until 2 days before the wedding - EEEEKKKK!) are stationed in Germany so she's given us pretty much free reign...anyways...since our budget is smaller than our guest list, we've decided to DIY the flowers. She want's white roses and orchids and her colors are white and yellow. So, any rec's in the Sac (and surrounding areas) of where I can buy the flowers to make into bouquets?
Thanks x's a million!
Oh, and I asked on the Knot and got one single lonely response... :-(
Re: XP: Floral Help (WR)
How exciting!
Don't know about orchids, but Costco always has nice roses and I think you can advance-order certain colors. Just call your local one and ask to be connected to the person who handles the floral dept.
Ditto. They are a little rough around the edges but they are my go to for flowers for events.
I grew up in the flower business. My mom has been the top florist in the Monterey/Carmel/Santa Cruz areas for over 40 years. I have worked probably well over 1,000 weddings in my day.
So, here is my advise. Keep it simple. If you don't have floral experience - you will find it more work than you probably anticipate. Orchids can be a tad bit tough to work with - in that they are fragile and they swoop in one direction. They can be tricky to get them to do what you want if you dont have experience. Also, don't touch the blossoms - as they will bruise. If you use roses, keep them as cold as possible. This doesn't mean the freezer - but the frig. If the blossoms are real tight the day of the wedding - put them in indirect sun for a couple hours- but keep an eye on them. This will help them open up a bit. When making the bouquets with roses, make sure to gently peal off any browned peddles. Never cut them with scissors either. It prevents them from properly sucking up water. When you first pick up the flowers, make a clean cut with a knife and put them in water. I wouldn't recommend picking up the flowers more than a day before the wedding since you dont have access to a wholesaler. Freshness is key.
For table centerpieces, the easiest is floating candles in a nice glass low container with some peddles and votive candles around the exterior. I even like the polished rocks in the bottom for a more modern look. It is simple, easy, quick to arrange and looks great!
If you need any other advise. Let me know... I have more expierence with floral design than I care to admit.
GL!
