Zofran Not Work For Anyone?

Hi ladies, 2 weeks ago I was so sick, couldn't even keep liquids down, so my doc called me in Zofran (or the generic version anyways) and told me to take it every 8 hours as needed. If it didn't work he was going to send me to the ER to get fluids. Well at first helped at, but now I'm feeling so horrible again. Lately its just been constant nausea, but Saturday and yesterday I vomited every time I tried to eat something (toast, crackers) and today its just total nausea. The Zofran doesn't seem to be helping at all. Anyone have any luck with another medicine? I'm seeing my doctor today at 2:30, I'm going to ask about any other drugs, but I wasn't sure if there was anything else safe to take.

Re: Zofran Not Work For Anyone?

  • My husband's cousin is on something that begins with a "P", not sure if that is helpful or not lol but she lost 15 pounds from being so sick and it's the only thing that helps her keep food down.

I was on Zofran for 2+ weeks, and then had one weird week where the same thing happened that happened to you, almost had to get fluids, and then I got back to "normal" aka only getting sick once or twice a day and actually being able to keep something down. Since then the Zofran has helped me a lot; still getting sick/nausea but not nearly as bad or frequently.

Hope they can find you something to feel better, I've been there and it's not fun. If it's any consolation I'm in my 13th week this week and finally feeling much more normal... hang in there !!!

  • You can ask for phenergan. Works great. But warning it makes me very sleepy!
  • Yeah...phenergan is great stuff, but it knocks you on your butt.

I had a friend who had hyperemesis so bad that it got to the point that she was on a med pump...I think it was of Zofran, but I can't remember.  I think her's what an exceptional case, though.  They don't do that often.

  • I recently shot the newborn of an OB nurse, and she said that the generic version of Zolfran is not as good as the name brand. Seems strange to me b/c I know they should be the same thing, but maybe there's some truth to it.

  • I've tried both phenegren and zofran and neither work all that great for me. I've heard that some girls take a zofran in the morning and then phenegren throughout the day and at night and that works for them. Just keep asking for different stuff until you find something that works for you. I hope you get relief soon - I know how horrible it is to feel sick all the time!

I have heard that about a few other meds...but with Blue Cross I'm sure they won't pay for it and I've heard its very expensive. Ahh.

Thanks for the support ladies, hopefully he can give me something different that will work :)

  • When I was getting IV fluids it didn't work for me.  They told me that when you get too dehydrated it won't work.  They had to give me regalan to get me going, and since then I've been stabilized w/zofran.

  • Zofran worked the first couple of days, then stopped. It would ward off the nausea for thirty minutes or so but then I'd be super sick. Luckily my nause finally stopped, but I found that citrus drinks were more helpful than anything. Lemonade and limeade and lemon water.
  • I'm on a combo of Zolfran and Phenergan. I take the Z when I get up, then P before bed b/c it doubles as a sleeping pill for me. I still have to eat something every 2-3 hours to avoid getting nauseus, but I don't vomit nearly as much as I used to.
