Doppler Question

I just got mine today and we were able to hear the heartbeat. The rate was odd though. It started at 125 and it kept decling. Do you trust the rate or just use it to hear the heartbeat?

On 4/12 I had an ultrasound (not internal) and the rate was 144. Last Sunday I went to the ER for a possible UTI and she heard the heartbeat at 170 using the ultrasound machine.

 Thanks

Re: Doppler Question

  • Honestly I'm surprised you can even find the heartbeat at under 9 weeks. I wouldn't worry too much about the rate, it's probably just hard for the doppler to pick up right now.

  • I don't have a doppler myself, but I wouldn't be too worried.  I went to the Dr at 10 Weeks and she tried to hear the heart beat then.  She told me not to worry if we didn't because the baby is low in your uterus, especially if it's your first baby.  She rescheduled me for 2 weeks later when I'm 12 weeks and said they'll definitely be able to hear it then.  Hopefully some of the other girls with dopplers can give you other ideas to try.  GL but don't stress out too much!
  • I have the Sonoline B and don't pay attention to the screen. It doesn't count accurately bc of the background noise. I just count and do it myself!

Are you sure it wasn't your own? When I pick mine up, it always starts at 120 and goes now. Plus I ignore the screen anyways and count myself.

I think you are super early to really be finding baby's heartbeat.

No I don't think it was mine. I had it down low on  my right side, when I moved it to the other sign I only heard static.

  • I would put money on the fact that this was your heartbeat not your LO's. If you were hearing your LO's heartbeat it would sound like a fast galloping horse. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong- it's just very very early to be hearing LO's hb on a sonoline. I've never heard anyone on the bump hear a hb that early on the sonoline.

  • I agree that I think it is probably your own HB you are hearing. Mine always starts at 120-125 and declines from there.  The baby's HB on the doppler always registers 150 and up and when I actually count, it is closer to 160-165.  Your HB sounds like more of a whoosh whereas the baby's will be a faint, very fast gallop.  Good luck!  Watch some of the videos on youtube and try again in a couple days!

  • I agree that you were probably listening to your own. Put your fingers on you neck while you do it to see if it syncs up. The babys will be much faster, quieter and harder to find. Once you find it, ignore the bpm on the screen and just count beats yourself for 15 secs.

  • I think I responded in a simliar post on another board.  But you are probably hearing vessel pulse and not the heart beat.  I notice two different sounds.  One will give a rate of around 130 the other gives a rate of 180 and I know that is the heart beat.

  • And in follow-up.  I have a Sonoline B doppler and I find the display numbers to be pretty accurate.

  • I'm 11 weeks and a few days and my baby is usually around 160bpm...Mine on the other hand is around 120 and then declines to 99ish. You likely did hear your own, when I searched the baby I found a vain in my hip on the right hand side which at first I thought was the baby too. To find the babies you have to go very low, right at your pubic bone and almost like your going under your pubic bone and you have to press fairly hard. Good luck!
  • We got a Sonoline B early this week (and actually I JUST gone done using it)  :) - so far we LOVE it! I don't pay much attention to the heartbeat number(s) that it feeds out (tonight - once I found my little bean's heartbeat - the numbers jumped from 150- 170). So my DH and I just counted ourselves to figure it out. Nothing like the sound of the baby's little ticker :)

  • It's probably your own heartbeat your hearing. The baby's should be in teh center and if you go too much to the left or right, you're heartbeat will be there. At my last appointment the MW explained and let me hear the difference between mine and the babies.
