Dilemma about when to stop progesterone suppositories

I have been taking Endometrin (progesterone suppositories) since 3 days after ovulation and my RE recommended I continue them through week 10. She explained that after week 10, the placenta takes over at which time it's safe to stop taking the suppositories. I was switched to a general OB at 9 weeks and at my first appt with the general OB, she said that some women continue with the Endometrin through week 12 and that since I have a lot of the suppositories left, I could just keep taking them until my supply runs out. So now that I am 11 weeks along, I don't know what to do- if I should stop now (per my RE's original recommendation) or continue through week 12 (per the general OB's idea). I would be thrilled to stop now (they are not pleasant to have to take) but I don't want to stop if there are benefits to continuing. What would you do?!?

Re: Dilemma about when to stop progesterone suppositories

  • When I did progesterone (PIO and then suppositories) with my IVF cycle I stopped even earlier than week 10 (week 8 I think) but I was a nervous nelly and had the ER test my levels first.

It all depends on your level of comfort.  I'm sure you're fine stopping now, but if you don't feel comfortable, what's one more week?

  • I also stopped PIO and the suppositories at around week 8 and have not had any issues.  Honestly I would trust my RE over my OB with regards to the hormone supplementation.  I was so happy to stop them b/c of the unpleasantness and b/c they made my m/s even worse. Good luck to you!
  • I can only tell you what my RE told me and that's that they usually have you on them the entire first tri.  I went in on Thursday for my NT scan and said that I had enough to get me through Monday (12w3d) and they said that was perfectly fine, I won't need anymore.

If your OB said it was fine to keep taking them, I probably would just because, but I know that's not a great reason.

I can't wait for Tuesday.  I hate those things.

  • I guess I have a side question to this question...

I am currently on Endometrin and ran out yesterday, and the one pharmacy in my town that carries them isn't open til Monday.  Will this 2 day gap be alright?

    Thanks!

I am on Prometrium. My OB and RE said stop at week 10 because beyond that can androginize (sp?) a female fetus.
