I want a doppler but DH thinks it could be bad

I want to get a doppler for home, but DH thinks it could be bad for the baby. I'm thinking of asking the doctor when we are there next in front of DH but that isn't till May 3. Did anyone else have to convince their SO and how? I would love to hear the HB and I think it would be fun to do with DS....

  • My DH thinks it's ridiculous that I bought one, but that didn't stop me from ordering it! So how I convinced him was I just ordered it and it came in the mail :)

  • I just ordered it. I told DH I was thinking about it but haven't told him that I did it yet. I guess he will find out in the next few days!

I wanted one, and still kind of do.

However, dh thought it would not be good for my anxiety, and I agreed.

  • I'm torn on the doppler too. According to a study, 1 min of doppler = 30 min ultrasound and excessive ultrasounds can lead to cell damage causing ear infections and even childhood cancers. It just seems like an unnecessary risk for the baby, you know? But I totally get wanting the reassurance of a heartbeat. It's a tough choice for me, but I think I'll just try to go with the flow and trust that everything is okay.

  • My husband didn't really care and thought it would be a waste of money. I ordered it anyways and once he heard the HB himself, he wasn't upset that I did at all. He loves it!

  • My feeling on the doppler is just like everything else in pregnancy... All thinkgs in moderation.  If you are going to use it all day every day, then maybe it's not a great idea.  If you can limit yourself or have DH hide it like I have heard of other ladies doing then I think it's fine.  I personally needed it for the reassurance after my loss in January and the bleeding I have had during this pregnancy.  You just have to decide how you are going to use it.

Agreed. I got mine on Wednesday and haven't used it since.  I don't want to be obsessed-- hearing it once was enough for me for awhile.

  • My midwife told me that a lot of time the at home ones don't work...not sure why. But she was against us getting one. I still want to though... ;o)

  • Like I said in my FFFC, I'm not confident they are safe for baby (there aren't nearly enough studies on this, if any at all), so I agree with your DH.  I'd love to hear/see baby, but it's not a risk worth taking, IMO.

  • I loved having one last pregnancy. Mostly because mid pregnancy the kicks can seem very far and few in between and waiting for the next kick to know everything was OK seemed like torture.

Was much easier for my anxiety to just check with the doppler really quick.

  • DH didnt want me to get one just because of the cost. He said it was stupid to spend money on. I told him its just for the nice reassurance. I have been so nervous that something will go wrong (previous m/c) so if I am worried I can just use that instead of paying for another appt to visit the OB in order to do it. We would pay the same amount for the doppler as we would for one appt but he still said it was a waste of money. Ug. I think I may just order it and he can deal with it.

  • I would love to have one, but I have a "very" tipped uterus so the tech said it will be very hard to find the hb, even several weeks from now. So Ive decided to save myself the anxiety and just wait till my next apmt.

What study did you read this in? I've never heard of any potential risks...?

  • I was thinking about it, but at my last appointment the nurse took about two minutes (it felt like an hour!) to find anything, and she does that every single day. I know I would freak out if I couldn't find anything and that would just make it worse.
  • Hiding the doppler has been the best! Granted its been 2 days lol, but I am sure I will stand strong. We just decided that 1 time in the evening on Fridays is it. However, IF it was not hidden, I would do it every day

  • You can rent the dopplers as well... not sure the site, but it might be something to think about for 1 or 2 months till we start feeling our babies move!
