Trouble TTC

Better to keep trying or take a break?

I'm a newbie to the Bump and curious about your thoughts on continuing treatments each and every month or if there are disadvantages to "going natural" for a while and then jumping back in?

We've had 4 treatments of Femera, most producing one follicle but no success to date. We'll need to move to a specialist next (our clinic doesn't do IUI). Just curious if anyone has had experiences taking a break or not?

Re: Better to keep trying or take a break?

  • I took a month off between IUI#2 and #3, and am planning another break if this one ends in a BFN as well (IUI#4 with injectables this time). I just need the mental break, our bank account needs a break, and I need to reclaim my life every few months. It's a long road, so you have to do what it takes to keep sane.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • I think it really depends on your diagnosis. Since I don't ovulate, taking a "break" would only be for an emotional reprieve, because there is little chance I could actually "try naturally" during that time. If you haven't gone to the specialist yet, I would at least go and do the consult before taking a break, just to get the ball rolling. GL!

This. Everyone is different and you do want you feel is right.

We are on break #2 right now. I really need it especially after doing IUI #4 with injects. It was just mentally heartbreaking for me after seeing that BFN. DH encourages us to take breaks b/c he knows this much harder on me than him (well most of the time).

    ((hugs))

  • I'm currently on a treatment break because after 4 inject cycles and 3 IUIs I needed a mental break. Since I seem to be Oing on my own for now, we are still trying. I will do 2 more IUI's in the fall and then move to IVF next year if nothing else works.

  • We are taking a break between IUI #1 and IUI #2 for a month, but as DH reminds me we're trying naturally...but with our MFI dx I don't have too much faith in getting a surprise BFP.  Moving on to a specialist is the right move.  If you want to break or just because it will be the time between docs, sometimes it's good for the soul to just be a couple.

  • It is definitely a personal choice- depending on your diagnosis- as PP said. I am very motivated at the moment- so I don't want a break ( although I guess my cyst puts me on an unwanted break). I can't imagine taking a break at this point- but who knows what the future holds. My bank account is definitely hurting. And I need a new car... Ugh...

This is me too.  I am on a forced break this month though.

  • I agree that it's your choice for sure, because there are so many factors involved in this decision.

We are taking a 4 cycle break between IUI 3 and IUI 4. We have to due to varicocele surgery, but I really appreciate that chance to lose the weight I gained and step away from the constant running to the RE. We're going on vacation too, which is a bonus!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • If you are still in excellent health than I would say keep going. If you don't feel that great or your dh is getting ansty I would take a break.
