I just got accepted to a clinical psychology PhD program ! This is literally a dream come true. The only problem is LO is 9 months old. Im worried that the extreme workload of graduate school will interfere with me spending quality time with my son. The program I have been excepted to claims to cater to the working family member. I am just curious if anyone else is in the same position, or has been through graduate school with a little one. If so do you feel you didn't have enough time to spend with LO?
Breast feeding, PhD. getting, part time working, obsessed with my son momma!!
Re: Any graduate school mommas ?
I actually got my Master's Degree when Eleanor was 3 months old- so I was in a similar boat. I was just finishing it up when she was born and working on my thesis- it was NOT easy, but I just kept thinking about the goal I was trying to reach, and BAM, it happened. Just stay confident in your decision and you will get through it! Of course, I am a stay at home mom for this first year, but I plan on reaping the benefits of my hard work soon! My biggest advice is to get a reliable babysitter/nanny/daycare for while you're doing schoolwork/studying if your partner is not around to help out. The peace and quiet are ESSENTIAL.
eta: I forgot to add CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!
First off congrats!!
I am not doing graduate school but I am doing a midwifery program. I spend about 80 hours away from home weekly. I know it is tough for my kids and it is crazy tough for me to be away from them for so long. To top that, DH works out of state so we only get to see him once a month.
In the end, this stage will only be temporary and in the long run the sacrifice will pay off with *hopefully* a better paying job and more flexibility to offer your kid(s) what they deserve.
If you set your mind to it, you will make it through and be fine, just make sure all the free time you get you spend it with your family and do not overwork yourself, when you are off you are off. Do not bring work home.
