Whoohoo! Re-finishing furniture!

I am just so stinking proud of our current project.  We found a really nice, solid, HEAVY executive style desk at a consignment shop this weekend.  We really need a desk, but don't have the $$ to shell out on the nice new ones we've been eyeing.  Well, now with a total investment of less than $200 (including lots of supplies we will use for a few more projects) we will have a beautiful, refinished, black desk that looks like something straight out of Pottery Barn.

We are so inspired that now we want to tackle refinishing our current oak dining table and our boring builders grade oak cabinets. We are going to paint them all black.

Re: Whoohoo! Re-finishing furniture!

  • That is awesome! I think its much better to repurpose something than to buy new.

I am demanding pictures when you take care of your cabinets. I have the yucky oak cabinets, too, and I HATE them with a passion. I really want to paint them white, but my husband is not on board yet.

That, and I'm not sure how to tie them in with the oak trim.

  • I have a consignment store find...want to come and refinish it for me...I was planning on black, too. Oh, and email me about your idea....I lost the e-mail. I want to donate something. bugabear at ymail.com
  • I refinish a lot of furniture.  I love finding a beautiful piece w/ a scratched up finish.  I've gotton stuff for $2 and got the most complements on the finished piece!

  • I'm so impressed. I need to find a nice all wood dresser or two to do the same thing to. I just havne't gotten around to looking for one yet.

We painted our cabinets when we first moved in, we did them white. I was time consuming but it made a HUGE difference in our kitchen

  • Sweet!

    Share pix if you can.

  • I will def. post pics!  The desk is a learn as you go piece and I think for the next two projects we may try a paint sprayer instead of the brush.  I want to really perfect the technique before we go for the cabinets.

  • Duh, i just remembered that I'm doing this in a couple of weeks with my current dining room table, too

I'd like to use a paint sprayer on the chairs, though, at a later date. They'd be a PITA to do by hand

  • Hula, did you use a brush or a sprayer for the cabinets?
  • A brush. We only did the outside of them, not inside &shelves. My FIL owned an auto body shop at the time so he sprayed the doors for us (but they turned out weird so we still had to hand brush them another layer)
