Gripe water- how often?

We've started giving H gripe water for colic (yes, she's colicky and it has been a very rough couple of weeks).  It appears to be helping, or at least we THINK it's helping.  But we're giving it to her after every feeding- it says to give it up to 6 times a day, and right now she's eating 6 times in 24 hours.

The dosage seems like a lot (it's 1 tsp, which means we have to give her two full syringes), and we've gone through a whole bottle in just 3 days.  Is that normal?  Should I be giving it less often, or just stock up on gripe water until this passes?

TIA!

  • Nope, what you're doing sounds right. In terms of giving it easier, I use one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Safety-Hospitals-Choice-Medicine-Dispenser/dp/B002RJKH4G/ref=sr_1_cc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1303313182&sr=1-2-catcorr (I got it from TRU). They hold several tsp and is great for any liquid med.
  • That sounds about right. Looking at your ticker, you are at the peak of fussiness. Dude hang in there, its crazy!

Colic calm worked better for us then gripe water. The hairdryer was also the best thing around that time.

Oh, that's good!  We've been using the little bottles that come with the Medela pump, which are basically the same thing, but I'll keep that link!

Yes, people keep telling me that 6 weeks tends to be the peak, so I'm hoping we'll see improvement soon.  We already are, kind of... she isn't having daily scream fests anymore, they're just sporadic now.  And the hairdryer is definitely my friend.  I save it for moments of desperation, since it will calm her when she's at her worst, but only for a few minutes.

Where would I get colic calm?  Is it sold in the same place as Mylicon and gripe water?  I don't remember seeing it.

  • Ditto pps. Sounds about right. We gave it pretty much at every feed for at least the first two monts. That stuff is expensive and its no bueno when you run out in the middle of the night, so we would stock up whenever we could  or when the grandparents would ask on their way over what they could get it would be... Diapers & gripe water pretty please!

  • In my case I gave it when the colic kicked in in the evenings.  So for us after her "dinner" feeding.  I sometimes tried a smaller dosage to see if it worked but for the most part kept the full dosage.
  • I will also note 2 things:

Right now this is not just peak colic time, but also 6w growth spurt. I remember the 6w being the worst time in G's life. I was loosing it that week and it was by far the roughest time I had as a parent. He was pretty much screaming non-stop.

S2 even now, at 5.5 months still gets gripe water. I only give it to him once a day, right before bed. I figure helpful or not, if it's helping him sleep even just a little bit, I'm not risking it. So yes, while pricey, that stuff is going down the hatch every night :) And we use Colic Calm too. I get ours at Walgreens.

  • Thanks, all!

Ava, I am praying this is the worst week.  If it's not, I don't know what I'm going to do.

  • If the screeming continues and becomes accompanied by spitting up and/or some chewing, (and possibly slow weight gain) on her part talk to her pedi about reflux. In our case, both boys have reflux. G's kicked in really bad at 6w, which made that period a lot worse. I just didn't know any better and for him it went untreated for months.
  • Ditto Ava on the reflux. Dylans pedi finally gave me the meds after I eliminated dairy from my diet. those two things combined=totally different baby
