Why would it be controversial if you don't like a particular name?
I guess i was saying controversial because everyone gets their panties in a bundle if one person doesn't like something they like. Maybe I should change the title...
I really don't like the name Ella as a full name. It just seems so blah and doesn't really sound all that pretty. It also isn't very fun to say. It just sort of falls out of my mouth. It doesn't make my skin crawl though.
I'm not a fan of names with excessive y's either, but I researched the socioeconomic impact of my kids name too, so take my crazy with a grain of salt.

Definitely, changing the I's to Y's and any other names with made-up spelling drive me crazy. Also, why add punctuation to a name; J'Lynn is going to be very difficult to write on any online applications.
I'm not a fan of names with excessive y's either, but I researched the socioeconomic impact of my kids name too, so take my crazy with a grain of salt.
How did you research that?
I started by reading Freakonomics, then the actual studies they referenced. Google: a roshanda by any other name.
Yeah, I read Freakonomics a while ago, and I was really interested in it, but the statistics seemed a bit dated, and I'd want more current information.
My name is Kathryn, so I don't hate all Y changes-but I don't like a lot of them.
I have very different tastes than a lot of people so there are a lot of names I don't like. The first thing that popped into my head is Ryan...for a girl. Obviously I like it for a boy (that's DS's name) but I really hate that it's becoming a unisex name.

I don't like Asher. It seems pretty popular too. I also don't really like the names that are girl/boy. My neighbors have a boy named Riley and I teach a little girl named Riley.

Ryan is my brother's name. It actually started as a female name. Oddly enough, Addison started off as a male name.

I completely agree! I really, really, really don't like the recent boy-to-girl-name conversions. Ryan especially bugs me, because they could have easily used Rhianna or Rhiannon. (Where is SnoopyLuv? She's usually all over this.)
And, FTR, even though I am not a fan of converting i's (or o's or any other vowels) to y's, I think "Kathryn" is one of the more traditional examples.

I don't like the i to y thing either, but I love Kathryn. It's on my short list if we have another daughter someday. I never thought of it in the same category.
We named DD Ella after her great great grandmother. I honestly did not know it was so popular until a month or so after she was born (guess I should have researched a little better). I was kind of bummed but oh well. It is special to me and that's all that matters.

Oh, I love, love, love (what I consider to be) unisex names. Obvs, my little gal is Morgan which can also be used for a boy. I love Blake for a girl, Jillian, Cameron, Avery, et, al. I know a lot of people strongly disagree, which, doesn't bother me one bit. I just had to share my unpopular opinion!
I also love many traditional names, too, for the record .

You know, it's funny, now that you mention it, for years my girl name of choice was Morgan. I still love it, even though DH and I wouldn't use it (he likes traditional names). I suppose it's a unisex name, but it's definitely not one of the recent conversions.
I never realized Jillian was unisex. It was in our top 3 girl names, although we probably would have spelled it Gillian.
I find it odd when people name their baby a very foreign name when they have no connection to the place. Roman's middle name is Viktor, but my H is from Poland and that is how it is spelled there. If it were any other circumstance, I would hate the spelling.

I wouldn't say hate but I am realllllly picky so most names aren't my style. I'd say some but I could probably go on forever and I don't want to offend or sound like a major B.

Jillian is not a boy's name. Maybe the OP is confusing it with Julian which is a completely different name.
I HATE unisex names. If I cannot tell your sex from your name I don't like it. It annoys me to no end.
Some people use the SSA's top 100 as a guideline for which gender the name belongs to but I still don't think that's legit. Addison is a male name, it means "Son of Adam" inappropriate for a girl IMO. Ryan is a male name. Not female, not sure where you got that from.
The surname trend is really getting to me, I don't like Sawyer, Grayson, Tucker, etc. I dont' mind if it's Mom's maiden name though, as I wanted to name my first son Barrett (my maiden name) but it doesn't go with our last name.
I am super opinionated on names (as you can probably tell) I just feel there are so many wonderful names out there for little girls, why give them a boy's name? Why use a surname that has no meaning to you when there are great first names?
Don't even get me started on the yuneek and cr8tiv spellings.

I LOVE unisex names too! My daughter is Reese. Reese is also a last name made into a first name. I guess lots of you would hate that one! (oh well!!) The ones that get on my nerves are Madison, Nevaeh, and names that are spelled untraditionally.

For all you Nevaeh haters out there, I actually know a little girl named Heaven. I personally think that being named "Heaven" is worse than Neveaeh. (Actually they are both heinous)
I'm not a fan of untraditional names in general. (and by untraditional, I mean unisex, made up, and just plain stupid) I'm totally fine with nicknames, but I think that you should at least give your baby a "normal" name that he or she can put down on a resume.
Loving the kathryn love!!! I also am not a fan of the i to y, y to i trend. I was worried about it looking like that's what we did with K's name. When we just spelled it the way my 90 year old great grandmother did. I also don't like Ryan or other boys names as girls names, and I say that as a girl with the middle name of Ryan.

names that can be shortened into nicknames are just NMS. i like the name elizabeth but dont like ellie, beth, or liz. kwim? nothing wrong with them, just not something i would choose.
on another note - lots of people hate my name choices, and are not shy about telling me. not that i care. i super LOVE boys names on girls and unisex names. yes, my DD has a unisex name. all 3 names on our short list were unisex names. i do not like girly names- theyre just not my taste, so i hate when people use the argument with me that little girls "should have pretty little girl names". why would i give my kid a name i don't like or that is not my style? lol. i guess they have to wear pink and boys have to wear blue too? LOL. i just don't get why people get so bent over what i named my kid.
