Celiac Disease

DH was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease and it runs in his family as well.  If you have a family history of Celiac, did you get LO tested and when?  Also, I am breastfeeding, so should I be considering a gluten free diet just in case DD is allergic?  Thanks for any information you can offer.

Re: Celiac Disease

  • My mom has Ciliac disease.  She has had it for about 10 years.  I have never gotten myself tested and have not gotten DD tested.   We never knew it to run in the family, however, I recently found out that one of my cousins has it now too.  I guess i should get myself and DD tested.  I asked the Dr and they didnt seem to think it was super important to get tested.

  • I have Celiac.  I haven't had DS tested yet.  He is breastfed and I make sure that any solids that we give him are gluten free.  I am curious as to what others are doing. I know that many of tests for celiac are only done if you are currently eating gluten.

  • I have celiac disease and I am not getting V tested for it yet. She is breastfed and she is not being introduced to any sort of pasta or breads yet. When she is, they will will be GF since that is what I buy or make anyway.

  • I have CD and I have several other family members with it as well. We had to see a pediatric gastroenterologist when DS was 13 weeks for his reflux and I asked what the protocol was for testing babies when there was a strong familial history of CD. The doc said that we would monitor him for symptoms as he grew and test him when he was older-around 12-24 months. In the meantime he said not to hold back on gluten because there needs to be exposure for the body to produce the antibodies they test for. If he had not been exposed prior to testing then the tests would come back negative. So we've not held back and so far he's done well with what he's had.

I was wondering about the lack of gluten and being tested also.  My DD has had breads and there hasn't seemed to be any reaction, and obviously I haven't held back on eating gluten, so she gets it through my milk.  My DH doesn't have any of the typical symptoms of CD though (he gets rashy and has high liver enzymes, sometimes get bloated), so I wonder if DD will either.  Thanks for all of the input everyone!  I have an appt next week with mine and DD's doctor (we see the same one), so she will be able to give more advice, but I was just curious what everyone else was doing.

I received the same answer as HH when I asked my pedi about it.  They made a note of it and said that as we introduced more solids - breads, pastas, etc - they would monitor DD's growth and weight gain more closely and if things stopped progressing as they have been they would move to test her.  It's not something I'm worried about at this point.  DD will likely have a more GF diet than most kids since that's what we eat at home, but she and DH will probably enjoy a bowl of cheerios together as she gets older :)
