Should I get a 2nd opinion?

My hcg levels keep increasing but both u/s I've had they keep finding an empty sac. Really has me confused. I will be 8 weeks tomorrow and I thought for sure they should be able to see something by now. The dr has brought up the idea of a D & C but i don't think thats something I even want to think about right now. I've read that other women have gone through the same thing, refused the D & C and have had healthy babies. Anyone have an opinion on what I should do?? I could really use other mommies advised right about now...

Re: Should I get a 2nd opinion?

  • What would it hurt to get a second opinion especially about something so important!? I would get one.

  • I think if you need a second opinion then you should call your insurance company and ask to get one.

I have never dealt with your issue, but my understanding is all babies grow at the same rate for the first 12 weeks.  I'm not a doctor but I would expect to have a heartbeat before 8 weeks.

I am sorry that you are having to go through this uncerainty.  T&P

  • I would get a 2nd opinion. Is there any change the dates could be off? At 8 weeks you should be able to see something but since you hcg levels are continuing to rise maybe the dates are off. It really doesnt hurt to get another opinion. If you dont know who to go to, go to your local board on here and ask for referrals. Thats how I found my OB and I love him. Good luck.

  • I went through a situation with DD#1 where at 5wk5days they only saw an empty sac and thought I should get a D&C right away. Something in my gut told me they were wrong, so I got a second opinion at another dr a few days later and everything was progressing normally and they were able to see a fetal pole.

If your gut is telling you otherwise a 2nd opinion couldn't hurt.

(*on a side not the original Dr called me when I was 8 months pregnant telling me it was their responsibility to get me in to have a D&C. I told them wtf I am 8 months pregnant. They told me it must be "some kind of miracle" because there was no way that was a viable pregnancy...uummmm? Tell that to the baby in my belly!)

  • A second professional opinion would not hurt.  If you want honesty then I am going to tell you that it does not look good.  I am so sorry to have to say this but I don't want others to get your hopes up.  You are 8 weeks and there should be a little "blob" baby with a HB in there.  You can have what is called a blighted ovum (empty sac) and your levels still go up.  I am so sorry you are going through this.  Update us please when you get the second opinion.  GL.
