Speaking of tips...

I think it may have been discussed once, a long time ago, but I can't remember...

What does one, if it all, tip for carryout service?

I have friends who waited tables in high school, and they said their tips got distributed among everyone (even kitchen staff).  So... if I order food from my favorite carryout place here in this rinky-dinky little town, and I don't tip when I pick it up, does that mean everyone (incuding cooks) are missing out? How common a practice is this shared tip distribution?

Then I shouldn't be expected to tip, if everyone did share, because I haven't even eat (ate?) the food yet when I pay, how do I know if it's any good?

Moral dilemma. Thanks for the help.

Re: Speaking of tips...

  • Shared tips are pretty common.
Where I waitress... we get waitress wage... but the kitchen staff get's minimum wage or higher.
We still have to give 10% of our tips to the kitchen staff.

  • In ever place I've every worked 3% of your sales goes to bar, busers, host, etc. so that means even if you don't tip they are paying at least 3% of your bill to someone else regardless. Carryout I usually tip 8-10%.

Majority of take out people make less than minimum wage so yes, you should tip them. It doesn't have to be as much as you would if you were dining in.
