Sorry if this question is dumb...but are all of do not eat this and do not eat that warnings mostly due to the risk of contacting a bacteria or does it really pose a risk of affecting the babies growth and development?
Just curious because I have definitely eaten things that I later found to be on the do not eat list. I wonder what people did before there were books and internet
Re: Silly Question about what we can't eat
you are right one... it all has to do with the extremely rare chance that they may have some bacteria...
to be honest it really isn't worth getting too worried about. My doc told me the chances of you getting sick are equal to you getting sick anytime you eat it. She told me to limit to once a week and not over do the lunch meats and soft cheeses but don't get worked up over it.
First time around i would cheat and then worry.... this time i just cheat
I happen to agree with both replies. I'm not overly concerned with avoiding, but am trying to be smart about my choices. I will not go 9 months without taking my daughter to get Yogurtland, because she loves it and over the summer, it's the best treat ever. I will avoid getting untoasted subs at Subway and am more wary about the dates on the lunch meat we have in the house. If we're out to eat and I order a ceasar salad, I ask if the dressing has raw egg and I refuse to eat a steak cooked more than medium rare... That's just icky, but I don't eat a ton of steak, so I feel okay about that.
And I am denying myself green tea until e 2nd trimester, but that's because I drink a ton of it and was warned to slow down while we were TTC since there may be a link to over-consumption and neural tube defects. And though the risk is low, I am comfortable with that choice.
Well said! When I mentioned the lunch meat thing to my sister, who had her kids before the lunch meat restriction was put into place, she thought that was the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard. She lived off of Subway during both pregnancies, as it was the only thing she could stand to eat. Think of all the women who were just fine eating lunch meat and soft serve while pregnant for all those years before were were told not to.
Hahah! me too!
