Questions for Choosing a Pediatrician

I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't yet chosen a pediatrician. I need to start calling around, but I'm drawing a blank on what questions to ask. Please help! This is all I got so far:

- Do you have evening or weekend hours?

- If my child is sick, can I normally get an appointment the same day?

- Do you have separate waiting rooms for well & sick patients?

Re: Questions for Choosing a Pediatrician

  • I went to a pediatrician orientation the other night, and some of the things they addressed that I found useful:

    - Vaccination schedule

    - When/how often they'll see the baby in the hospital

    - What hospital(s) they have privileges at

    - After-hours emergency calls

  • I haven't chosen one yet either.  We only have one practice in town that is a group pediatricians office so I just asked people I knew who their pediatricians were and if they liked him/her and that's how I am going to pick for our girl.

  • you don't have to make a be-all, end-all decision.  pick someone you think will be good.  then, just like with your own doctor, you will get a sense after a few visits of whether you trust this person and want to keep him/her as your pediatrician.  we switched pediatricians shortly after our dd was born because we could tell that things weren't working out.  all of the pre-natal planning had been for naught.  but we quickly found another pediatrician we were much more comfortable, and we're planning to use her for our second baby too.

  • I went in and met with a pediatrician who was recommended by a friend, and the pediatrician actually had a time set up specifically in her day for new parents. She had a whole thing she went over (vaccinations, circumcision, office practices, seeing the baby in the hospital, etc.). So when you call, they might have that information for you and you won't have to ask all of the questions. I know I didn't know what the hell to ask, either!

  • This is from the bump and also in the bump pregnancy book. I only asked our pediatrician a few questions during our consultation. He was thorough without me asking too much. Good luck with your search and you'll find who is right for you and LO. You can always switch doctors if you're not satisfied! :-)Re: How can I find a good pediatrician? What questions should I ask when I interview them? The Bump ExpertYou're smart to be thinking about interviews. Even if there?s only one name on your list of potential pediatricians (we recommend at least two), it?s a good idea to meet in person and learn about their practice and philosophy. Try to settle on a pediatrician by your seventh or eighth month to avoid waddling in and out of even more doctor?s offices during those last few weeks. The best way to start your search:  Ask around -- your friends, family and OB are great sources for referrals. You can also find more real mom recommendations in our lila guide, or check the list of American Academy of Pediatrics members in your area. (Don't forget to run candidate names through your state's medical board to check for any disciplinary action.)Once you?ve got a few names, it?s time to set up the interviews. You?ll probably only have about ten minutes for each, so ask the most important questions first. Remember, there are no ?right? answers here- let your (baby-filled) gut be your guide.  Basic Information[   ] Doctor:[   ] Practice:[   ] Location:[   ] Phone:[   ] Email:[   ] Website:Ask the Doctor[   ] How long have you been practicing?[   ] Do you have any sub-specialties?[   ] What are your hours?
