If you give finger foods

Do your LO's have teeth?  I'm so nervous about giving DS things to eat because he can't chew them up yet.  He also tends to gag every time that he tries something.  I have to break his puffs up or he will gag.  It makes me very nervous.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Does he have a good pincher grasp? I wouldn't force it if he keeps gagging. He may not be ready. We started out with purees, then made her food a bit chunkier, and then started puffs that were soaked a bit in water. She doesn't like the texture, but she is getting better.

Teeth, at this point, have nothing to do with it. They can chew on things with their gums, and some foods like the puffs, just dissolve as they move it around in their mouth.

  • I'm waiting till he gets a little older. I gave DS puffs one day and he was fine the first couple but then all of sudden started choking. It scared the crap out of me so I haven't given him any since. He does much better the Mum Mums maybe because they dissolve faster. I dunno. I would wait a little longer then if he's gagging but that's just me after having that incident.  My friend started puffs at 5 months and he's fine. I guess it just depends. Every child is different. Good luck!

  • If he is gagging I would say wait a couple of weeks and then try again.  This is what I did with DD and the second time around she did great!  Now she looooves her puffs and has no issues with gagging.
