Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When to start proper food?

When did you start proper food with your babies? (ie: foods that need to be chewed like veggies, etc. - parts of our own meals )Are there any great websites on this that you could pass on? We're anxious to start proper foods with them as we're spending about 50 pounds+ each week on purees and fruit cups for the girls and it's really starting to hurt. ($81 USD/week)

Re: When to start proper food?

  • it just depends.

We did purees for about 2 months and then Chase just did better with table food. Started him with Cheerios/puffs at 5 months. And fully moved to table food around 6 months 1 week. He eats everything  I and #1 eats for breakfast/lunch/dinner. I don't consider myself a BLW-

however I am very big on letting LOs explore food (safely of course)-

For breakfast Chase will eat scrambled egg, 1/2 toast and a fruit-

lunch he will eat - full veggies- and things like a quesdilla (on whole wheat tortilla- cheese) shredded chicken etc

dinner same- whatever we are eating.

its important to let them explore food and learn to pick it up

Both of my kids were off purees 'early'-

Chase 6.5 mo and Gisele by 9 months.

I think by the second kid- you just realize the babies are ready MUCH sooner than 'you' are.

  • Your LO can eat a lot of the same stuff that you do.  So many mom's make their own purees which saves a ton of money.  Wholesomebaby.com is good.

  • Like PP said- https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com rocks for making your own food!

We just feed him purees and then I offer him bits of parts of what we're having.  He usually doesn't "truly eat" any of it, but he plays with it and tries, and therefor is learning. :)

  • We started table foods right at eight months.  She has had a really wide variety of food at this point--lots of different veggies, fruits, grains, and meat.  Last night she ate baked spaghetti and LOVED it.
  • I have tried offering non pureed food and he just isn't ready for it yet. My MIL gave him a tiny piece of smushed banana and he threw up. Then I tried again to see if my smushing was better and he threw up again.

This. And sometimes we give him tiny tastes directly in his mouth. Just start with really soft foods and see how they do. Have you done puffs yet? They can't actually choke on those b/c they melt away, so they're good to start with. P.S. Thanks for providing the exchange rate. ;)

You can also buy a food mill and grind up whatever you're making for them to eat. hth
