Anti-nausea medication

So I went for a checkup yesterday, and since week 5 I've been having severe m/s. At first I was prescribed Phenergan (sp?) which helped a little, but then led to vomiting multiple times a day. My OB then prescribed Zofran yesterday, everything I've read said it's safe to use during pregnancy. I was wondering if anyone else is taking or has taken Zofran?

Re: Anti-nausea medication

  • I'm on Zofran and wish I could say it were a magic bullet but it only lessens my symptoms and prevents me from constantly dry heaving.  It is a marked improvement on how I was sans meds though- hope you have better luck with it!

  • PS my sister took Zofran for both her PGs and now has school age children that are completely healthy, bright and well adjusted kids.  Zofran is class B which is actually safer than Phenergan (class C).
  • I'm on Zofran.  It takes the edge off, but I only feel about 80% on it (which I'll take!).  My Dr has me taking it as needed--some days I feel much better than others.

  • My doctor prescribed me Reglan today but I'm hesitant to take it.  a) I read some people feel extremely drousy on it and I need to take care of LO so I can't feel like I'm about to pass out any more than I already do.  b) I've read A LOT of reviews on it today that said that people felt extremely depressed on it and even suicidal.

I think I will take it this weekend while my husband is around and so that he can moniter me for side effects AND help out if it does make me drousy.  I'm nervous

  • I just started Zofran yesterday. My m/s was so bad that I couldn't even keep water down, and I was close to having to go to the ER to get fluids. It was horrible. I tried the whole saltines before getting up and all throughout the day but it didn't help at all. I agree with the other ladies, it does take the edge off and I do feel about 75%, but its not completely gone. Speaking of...I need to go take more now!

Same here.  My doctor said that it loses effectiveness the longer you take it, so to take as little as possible.  Instead of taking it preventively (3x a day as prescribed), he only wants me taking it when I start throwing up so that I can keep food and fluids down.

  • I was on Zofran for a few weeks and was happy with it but stopped taking it because it constipated me - had to choose the lesser evil which was the nausea IMO.  It won't magically work but it will help.
  • I'm taking the generic Zofran. I only take it in the morning. I feel pretty crappy by the end of the day but I figure my husband can just deal with making his own dinner and let me go to bed early. I try not to take it if I'm not bad. I work at a high school and I don't think I could have survived without if when my symptoms were worse in past weeks. If I'm not working (like over the weekend and spring break) I don't take it and just deal with the m/s.
  • I'm on Zofran. I also really didn't want to use anti-nausea drugs, but after ending up in the ER for dehydration, I'll take it.  At most I only throw up 3 times a day (instead of 6-7) and on rare days, I don't even throw up at all.  I don't know how I would have managed to keep working without it.

  • I've known a lot of people who've taken Zofran for their pregnancies. The effectiveness I think is tied with your body and the severity of your morning sickness.

As a nurse, I give Reglan, Zofran, and Phenergan very frequently to my patients (who are NOT pregnant). Taken for a short period, I haven't personally seen anything negative associated with these. If your doc prescribed them and you're having a hard time, I'd say at least give them a try. It's better than being in the ER for dehydration, like pps have mentioned.
