s/o epidural... Anyone only use IV meds?

I had my DD just a little over 12 years ago and I didn't have an epi during labor. I did however have some IV medications that basically helped me sleep through my entire labor, even having to be woken up because it was time to push.

Having labor in mind, I always remembered it being easy but now I'm starting to think I was probably given too much medication. I have no idea what they gave me but man it worked great.

Now thinking about my impending delivery, I am flat out scared that my experience will be entirely different. I'm not sure what my doctor will give me, if anything, and I'm really freaked out about having an epi.

Anyone have any tips/suggestions/experiences with IV medications that they are willing to share?

TIA

Re: s/o epidural... Anyone only use IV meds?

  • I had a couple shots of phentynol (sp?) and that was it.  It really was like being drunk.  It's pretty short lived though.
  • I had an injection of fentynol the night before my Cesarean, after I'd labored for almost 4 days (without meds).  It made me so very sick and I wouldn't take it again.

I agree with this.  I went for the fentanyl before the epidural (it was going to be awhile before the anesthesiologist  could get there). It didn't really do anything for the pain, it just helped me relax between contractions.  And it was really short lived.

they gave me more fentanyl while they were stitching me up (the epidural didn't work that well for me), and because of that, I wasn't allowed to hold DS right away.  I felt really woozy/drunk.  when they finally let me hold him, DH had to stand guard over us to make sure that I didn't drop him.

  • I did IV phentanol(sp) sorry. I really didnt want an epi, as I had one with my son 8 years prior and had a horrific experience. The transition time was horrible, but the IV meds really took that edge off of the contractions. I did have induced labor though b/c my water broke with no contractions, so I am sure that increased the overall intensity. I really had a good birth experience this time, and was pleased with my experience with the IV meds.

They in no way take the pain away, but make it more managable.

Hmmm..I don't think this is what they gave me because I held my munchkin right away and they didn't make anyone watch over me. I wonder if there is a way to pull my chart from Kaiser to find out what it was, hopefully they would still have it since it was soo long ago. I'm not going to Kaiser this time so they won't be able to look at my chart :-/

You can go to the medical records office & pull your records. I had DD at Kaiser as well, and maybe it wasnt Fentanol I got. I did not feel drunk, or sick & I got to hold DD right away. It was short lived, but they gave me a shot every 20 minutes during that transition period.

  • I had Stadol with my first baby (near the end I opted for an intrathecal). I will never, ever get IV drugs again. They made me feel so drugged up and out of it. I couldn't advocate for myself and the whole experience just felt like a nightmare. It didn't help with the pain at all either and I strongly suspect it hindered breastfeeding. My son just seemed so out of it and wouldn't even try and nurse. It took 2 weeks to get him to successfully latch on.

With my next two I skipped the IV drugs and waited until I could get an intrathecal. It was a million times better for me.

I did not realize this. Do I go to the hospital I delivered at?

Kaiser Santa Clara has a specific MR office. Not sure what they have where you went, but you can probably find out.

There's a more medical explanation but basically it's similar an epidural in that it delivers pain meds into your spine. It's just one dose so you don't have a tube left there like you would an epidural. The drawback is that the pain relief only lasts for a couple of hours so it isn't ideal for a long labor.

I held Q right away...maybe it's more to do with how long it's been since your last dose.  Kaiser limited the number of doses...I think it was 3 that was allowed.
  • Thank you for all of the info ladies!
