Baby Names

Does this name work?

My husband and I both like the name Jackson. We would have the full name of Jackson Indiana Potts.

However, did any of you think anything about the nickname of Jack for that and then having them be called Jack Potts and notice the issue with that? We kind of think it'd be okay because Jackson usually isn't shortened and they could just go by Jackson or Indy or even if they decide to they could go by Jack.

Do you think that would ever be a problem? We don't want it to turn into one of those "wow, those parents didn't think about that when they named their child".

  • Thanks! Most people we've told it to also take a few times saying it out loud to get it and so we weren't too concerned but my MIL thinks it's overly-silly. I still like it though.
  • Jack is my favorite boy name, but I wouldn't do it.  It took me a minute to figure out, but not that long.  Sorry!

ETA: Jackpot? like what you win? I was trying to figure out something dirty! I don't think that's a big deal.

  • At least he isn't Jack Off... Jack Pott isn't so bad, maybe he will be lucky!

ETA - Just so you know kids will zone in on his full name though. Jacks on Pott(s)

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • The first thing I thought of when looking at the full name was that "Jackson, Indiana" sounds like a city/town.  (And, apparently, there is a Jackson County Indiana.)

I also wouldn't count on other people not automatically shortening Jackson.  My DH is a Philip who HATES "Phil" & one of my best friends is a Michael who HATES "Mike"...you'd be amazed by how frequently (& quickly!) people will go to the NN, thinking they're being chummy or friendly.  I've seen this happen even a few seconds after they've specifically introduced themselves by their full FNs!

Having said that, the "Jack Potts" situation may or may not be a big deal to you guys.  I don't know if young (elementary school aged) children would be perceptive enough to pick up on it, & because it's a little silly, but not dirty, I don't know how much "sting" it would have later on.  If you're super concerned about any possible teasing, you may want to try again.  But it seems like it's pretty benign, to me.

Jackson's a great FN name, though...GL with whatever you decide!

  • My oldest son is Jackson - he's almost 7. Nobody has ever called him Jack, so I think you're safe. And Jackpots isn't bad ;)

  • Meh, I might have to say don't do it....that's a tough one though. If you're stuck on the name then do it, but def don't shorten to Jack.

  • If you're worried about a nickname, you could always start calling him Sonny. Kind of different, but technically does work with JackSON.  :)

Otherwise, Jack Potts is pretty terrible.
