NST, Doppler Sono, High Risk doc and still no answers

I am getting freaked out now by all of these tests and no answers.  5 weeks ago the doc noticed the baby started measuring behind via sono.  she ordered a follow up sono for 4 wks later.  so a week ago at that sono they noticed the baby os falling further behind and my fluid levels dropped drastically.  so i was sent to the highrisk doc yesterday.  she did a doppler sono, looked at his brain, kidneys, bladder, heart, spine and took measurements of him and all his bones.

she said nothong looked suspicious but that now he is in the 10th percentile for growth. so i was a little calm about the nothing look suspiciois part but asked jer about IUGR since I know that term is usually thrown on at 10 th percentile.  she said she does not like to use that term if she isnt able to locate a reason for the small size.

she went on to saw she would recommend that i dont go past 39 weeks.  i thought that was strange...why does one extra week matter?  then a few mins ago my regular obgyn's nurse called and wants me to do a NST next week.  i a little fustrated and overwhelmed with no answers.  why more tests if everything is ok? and if everything is ok why is he tiny? neither dad or i are small people.

sorry for the no caps and spelling.  im typing frm my ph.

Re: NST, Doppler Sono, High Risk doc and still no answers

  • Call your doctor and leave a message explaining that you want a call back with some answers.  She/he will have reports from every other dr/test you have had and legally must tell you what is in them all.

  • First, take a deep breath. We're doing extra testing twice a week now with 1 NST & 2 BPP's (One day a week we do both) because we're considered high risk. I'm so sorry you aren't getting any answers. That is the most frustrating part. I would try to call the regular office back and talk to the nurse if you can to get some answers. If not you might try the high risk office just to see if they will talk to you. I'm sorry and I'll keep you guys in my thoughts & prayers that everything works out just fine.
  • I just want to say I understand how you are feeling.  I'm upset right now and I don't even want to type out the details of what we are going through, but I know how you feel about getting unclear info from the docs.  Just keep asking questions and doing what you can for your baby.  I read in a medical journal earlier today that 70% of babies that are below 10th percentile are just "constitutionally" small (meaning there is nothing wrong with them, they are just small) so I found that comforting. GL!
  • I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. I second calling the office and ask for some answers. I would also get a second opinion. It's not worth sitting here worrying. I saw two MFM doctors and they were on opposite sides of the spectrum when it came to my care. Every doctor is different. If there is truly any problem I personally would not want to wait until 39 weeks. One doctor wanted me to wait until I went into labor naturally. NO THANK YOU. She is obviously in danger if you are having to check my blood every two weeks as well as giving me an ultrasound every week. I finally talked to the other doctor and she said she is taking her right at 37 weeks. Better out than in if there is a problem.  IF big IF you do find out there is a problem I'd find a proactive doctor that explains everything to you in detail.

  • Definitely call back and demand some answers.  It sounds like they're just being very cautious at this point.  Some babies are just small--even babies from big people.  FIL is 6'2" and MIL is 5'10", but DH was only 5 lbs, 14 oz when he was born and his sisters were each barely over 6 lbs.  All were full term and all of them grew up to be tall like their parents.   On the other hand, my mom was average height, my dad is below average, and I was 7lbs 8 oz and am now dead-on average.  You just can't tell from birth weight.  Some people just have small babies!
  • How many weeks behind is the 10th percentile?  At my 3D scan (27wks) my baby was measuring right on everywhere but her head which is about a week behind.  This freaked me out royally but when I went in last week for a regular sono they said that she's been that way all along (even showed me the measurements at 20wks) and said that it's not something they even mention normally because until you are at least 2 weeks behind they don't worry about it.  This sort of comforted me but not totally.  The best advice is to keep asking questions until you get an answer that is clear to you...
