Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: Tummy sleep question

Sorry for the very 3-6 question.

Alex is rolling around in his crib like it's the floor exercises event at the Olympics.

He will roll onto his tummy, but last night he did and finally calmed down and started to fall asleep--- but his face was pretty much smushed into the mattress, or barely to the side. This of course made me nervous so I waited to see if he would move it to the side and finally went up to try to move it. He has great head control and all, but...

FAIL. Woke him up he got pissed ended up having to feed him 20 minutes later.

What do you do in that case... and do they get better at it?

Re: XP: Tummy sleep question

  • Let him sleep however he falls asleep as long as blankets and stuff aren't in the crib.  Playing flip the baby/reposition the baby is a game you will always loose.  I know, I tried to play lots when DD first starting rolling over, I lost every time :-)

If he can get himself into the position he can get out of it.  Once he falls asleep you can sit and watch for awhile...that helped me feel better because I would see that eventually she would turn her head when she wanted/needed to.

  • My LO has slept face down since he learned to roll to his tummy a few months ago. I freaked out for a few nights and checked on him constantly, but he's been totally fine and won't for a moment sleep on his back anymore. So try not to worry too much.

  • Thanks ladies.... I just still freak out about it. That would have given me an hour of sleep back.

  • Let him sleep like that.  Once they are strong enough to get rolled over, they are able to get their head moved if need be.  Dont worry about it.
