When DC was younger we used a spray. Banana Boat for Babies and then Banana Boat for Kids (sweatproof). As a baby we sprayed in our hands then applied to him all over. As a Toddler we sprayed, rubbed in directly on his extremities, and still did the hand application for his face.
Since it's so early in the season, he's just been using ours. NoAD Sport SPF 50.
We plan to stock up on more of the Banana Boat stuff for home and school.
And we've tried the Target Brand of Spray for kids & the spray function doesn't work great so you end up with a film of mess on EVERYTHING. Spend the 40-80 cents more and get the brand name.
There are some nasty things in sunscreen, I buy carefully. Here's the list from last year of the best sunscreens. We use Alba and use California Baby on J. Avoid the mists especially because that just puts the chemicals in the air in tiny particles for kiddo to breathe in.
Oh, and it really is a good idea to practice always wearing a hat and shirt out in the sun. We do put sunscreen on J when he'll be in direct sunlight for an extended amount of time but we don't slather him up each morning just because. He does however wear a hat every time he goes outside, it's become part of his routine and he loves his hats!

Ditto PP...I selected the Johnson & Johnson Baby daily face and body sunscreen because of it's ranking. (It ranked a "2" but was the most reasonably priced and available.)
We use California Baby, but rely as much as possible on sun protective clothing and hats. We are all very fair skinned and DD has seemed to inherit my sensitivity to the sun. CA Baby makes a lotion and a face stick, both which work well for us.

Yeah, DH had melanoma, so we're super careful with DS out in the sun. He always has his sunhat!
I use Badger. I tried CA baby and it was kind of gross in my opinion, I could not get it to run into our skin and also for some reason, a huge glop came out every time.
Badger is rated the very best in terms of no chemicals and it rubs on decently and doesn't smell at all, and works great. I am hugely picky about that, because I buy organic food and all natural products and try to keep the chemicals to a minimum.
I don't think it costs more either, in fact I think it was a little less.

Ditto. I pretty much hate CA baby but will use what we have left of it. I posted in ladipale's post above about the two brands I found.
I finally found our huge basket of sunscreen (it had gone missing in the last move). I keep all sorts of stuff on hand cause the badger and think baby brands are not readily available and are $$$$. Banana Boat is super easy to apply, and so are the sprays. We try to limit the exposure to those, but if its all I've got I'll use it.

Ditto the CA baby kind. It is a PITA to apply compared to the spray on stuff but worth the extra time, effort and money to me. I need to find and try the Badger kind. I hear great things but can never find it when I need it.
