Ben's 5 year stats.

First, he's obese.  That should be known.Stick out tongue

Here's a pic of him in September, but not much has changed....he's wearing that same outfit today, but the adjustable waist is looser. (ETA and the pants are about 2" shorter....I'm to tight to buy new ones!)

He was 53 lbs. (96%)   44" tall.  (71%)

He's always been around 90-98% for weight and 70-75% for height.  I just think it's so crazy that due to the numbers he's technically obese.  Dr is not concerned, and neither am I.  He's just really REALLY dense. lol.

Re: Ben's 5 year stats.

  • My 5 1/2 year old is technically obese too.  I say he has heavy bones.  Dense is a good word - he's having a hard time learning to swim - he sinks.

He's off the charts for both height and weight.  Right now (he was weighed recently at a sick visit, but I'm guessing more at his height), I'd put him at 58 lbs and 49 inches.

He looks like a 7-year-old.  But he's quite a bit slimmer than several boys in his class who are shorter.

I hate that he's obese too.  But it does sort of give me a warning that he needs to be careful or it might catch up to him.  He's always been off the charts - he was almost 10 lbs at birth.  I got a lecture from the doctor once - when he was 3 and he had gained a bit out of proportion with height, but it was right before a growth spurt and he was fine again in a few months.

ETA: Here's a recent photo of him from FB,  Pardon his hair, he had just had a TERRRIBLE haircut.  It's so much better now and this was only about a month ago. image

  • he is adorable!

  • yeah, sometimes I think the bmi is bs.  it doesn't seem to adjust for frame. some people have a wider frame.

they don't look overweight at all.

meanwhile, my dd has always been low on the percentiles... they were watching her closely for  awhile.  she was 41" and just under 37lb at her 5 y/o physical.  still in 4T clothing and her bmi was 15. something which is right in the normal range.  just about all of the boys in her class look a year older than the girls. no one looks fat or overweight... just taller and broader. maybe this is one of those boy growth spurt ages. ; )

  • My boys are the same, #1 was 4 in February, and 51 lbs, 44 inches.  He is sturdy, but does not look obese at all and eats well (healthy).  He has always been off the charts (from 4 months) and actually the curve got a little closer to the actual chart this time.  #2 is a big boy as well, but closer to 95% then actually off the chart.  I think it is just their natural frame, and make a point to stay very conscious that they are eating healthy foods and staying active. The pedi is not concerned either.
  • What a handsome man!
  • He is too cute!  DD's always been "thick" too.  She's short 41 inches and ranges between 40-43 lbs.  She had relatively no growth from age 4- 5 but she seems to have gotten taller lately.  I might have to weight and measure her.

She used to always be in the upper percentiles (esp as a baby) but has leveled off some.

I often wonder how much it had to do with how she was feed as an infant (FF) compared to my boys (BF- and always in the low %'s)
