1. ban on toys in the happy meals (like San Francisco)
Against, parents can make their own decisions on how they feed their kids
2. McDonalds will no longer be building their fast food restaurants with a play area
Eh, I can say I'm kind of for this. Although it is true that parents can decide whether or not to allow their children to play in it, those areas are so germ infested it's disgusting. And I'm not talking just normal, everyday germs. My H brought DD to one of those play areas once and a kid puked in it and the mom just left it there. This is unacceptable and some parents are just not responsible and then my poor kid is crying because she doesn't understand why she isn't allowed to play in it. It sucks. Now that she is turning 5 she is starting to understand
Against - it's up to the parents to go there or not.
This is where I'm torn on #2. I agree with this statement, it just pisses me off how some parents can be so irresponsible and makes it impossible for other kids to play in those areas.

No different than a public park, pool, whatever. Some parents just don't care. A kid can puke just as easily on an outdoor playscape than they can at mcdonalds.
Against. It should be up to the parents. I am perfectly capable about making educated choices for my children in regards to their diet and health and don't think that Big Brother needs to be involved with this. Life is about making sacrifices and also about being able to enjoy things in moderation. Why should everyone suffer because of the few parents that do make bad choices for their kids. What's next, are they going to start serving Veggie Burgers at Chuckie Cheese? - says the vegetarian Mom.

I think it's silly. As a parent I don't take my kids there and really dislike that other people do (my aunt and my ILs do on occasion) but I don't think it's the government's business to intervene here.
Against. WTF. We go to McDonalds about once a month and it is a big treat. Our local store does not have a play area, so when we go to one that does, I am in heaven.
Parents need to set limits for themselves.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
The indoor play area at the McD's up the street from my neighborhood is a life saver for me on a cold or rainy day when my ADHD kid is climbing the walls. I hope that's not true and if it is, I hope they don't tear down the ones they have. It's a free place to let my kids work off some energy.

Against. I actually have Pedro breakdancing on my desk right now for amusement. (DS got it in his happy meal yesterday and gave it to me for my office. What a sweet kid.)

I do the same but with Burger King because its indoor--honestly in our small town, there are not a lo tot play places like the larger metro areas. I found and article saying that they are going to that yuppie style (low lights, mahagony, etc) however it didn't mention the play areas. Like I said, I don't know this person's source.
Against!!! Said as I sit watching L play in the play thing at McDonalds. . He had a dentist appointment and he asked to eat here. We rarely eat fast food and he sees it as a huge treat because its just us 2.
against!!! We go to the kids play area at least once per month. We go after school, I get the kids a fruit and walnut salad for an after school snack, they play and burn off some energy. They know they need to sanatize and wash their hands, lots!
Against both! One of the McDonalds near us just remodeled and got rid of their play area. We found out when we took the kids there to play. :-( I agree that they're not any different than any playground. Plus isn't it better that McDonalds has somewhere for kids to get some exercise after eating all that unhealthy food.

I don't have a problem w/ them taking the toys out of happy meals--I really don't like the idea of toys & food being associated w/ each other anyway. And its just one more piece of cheap plastic crap for me to step on and have to find a way to throw out w/o DS noticing its gone.
I know in SF they were talking about only allowing toys in the meals that fell w/in certain guidelines--like the kid chose apples instead of fries or something like that. I have no problem w/ that per se, although I do agree with those who said there are more important things to be focusing on in terms of legislation. But I live in the land of health-conscious hippies where they have warning signs at Starbucks about how baked goods and coffee can give you cancer.
The play area is no big deal to me--at least it gives the kids a chance to burn off some of the crap calories they've just ingested. LOL
Is #2 something McD's is choosing to do? I hadn't heard of this one.
I heard that but not sure of the persons source. They just built a new one by our house and it didn't have one...
I hope it isn't true. There is a McDonald's with a really clean nice playground right by our house but they are tearing it down to build one on the corner. In the summer it is 110+ degrees here and McDonald's is one of the few places the kids can play during the day.

I am against it; I am also against the government intervention in this... (and with soda machines).

I freaking HATE kids meal toys.
But not something the government should be spending time legislating.
