3rd Trimester

36 weeks with an 8lb. 5oz. baby! Anyone else have a GIANT baby?

I had my Growth U/S today, and she said baby is 8lbs 5oz., plus or minus one pound. So even if it's on the very low end, subtracting a pound, that's a 7lb 5oz baby, plus 1/2 a pound per week.

I'm not really excited about birthing 9 1/2 pound baby! Eeek!

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • At 30 weeks my baby measured 4 pounds. Dr. says I can easily expect a 10 pound baby. And she looked at the head and said GOOD LORD! (its in the 95%). So she's scheduling a c-section for 39 weeks.
  • Eeek! At my 29 week appointment I had to have a growth ultrasound and my baby was measuring 3lbs 10oz. Do you have gestational diabetes? The specialist I had to see swears I have it. I passed the first test, but he wants me to retake it at 32 weeks.

  • Just about to transition over, but last time my Abbey was 9 lbs 6 oz, and I'm a pretty petite 5 ft nothing mama.  I still feel like quite a stud that I didn't need a c :)  Still, took quite some time, which is making me a little nervous for this time around.

Good luck!  One great thing about big babies- they eat more at a time, and sleep longer stretches :)

  • At our 30 week growth ultrasound - our little one weighed 3.72 pounds and in the 82 percentile.  If you add the 1/2 pound for the 10 weeks - we are pushing 9 pounds.  My husband is 6'4" and 225lbs - I am guessing my hopes for a 7 pound baby is out the window!
  • My "little" guy weighed in at 7lbs 13oz at our 36w3d growth scan...all of his measurements are above the 90th percentile so yeah...I feel your pain!

  • I am 33 weeks today with an already 5 pounder. I do have Gestational Diabetes though that is getting worse. I just started medication, so hopefully baby won't grow so huge.

  • My son was born 9 lbs. 1 oz. at 38 weeks exactly.  I had no idea he was going to be such a big baby because my OB practice does not do routine ultrasounds in the third trimester (so I had not had an ultrasound since 20 weeks).  I had a successful vaginal birth - worst part was 2 hours of pushing, but only had a minor tear.  I was induced at 38 weeks for high blood pressure and swelling, but if I went to my due date I would have had a 10+ pound baby!  (And I just had a growth ultrasound today at 37 weeks based on my history and baby is measuring at 7 lbs. 2 oz... I know they can be off by a lot, but it is looking like this baby likely will not be as big as my son was.)

  • No, I don't have Gestational Diabetes. I'm only 5'5", and I am not overweight. I've only gained 29 pounds during the whole pregnancy.

I think me and DH are just dense.(haha) We both weigh a lot more than we look like we should...so maybe baby will be average size but weigh more?

Luckily, my midwives don't believe in C-sections due to U/S measurements, since those are always off.

If your body can build it, you sure as heck can birth it! :) (most of the time....)

  • at my 33 week apt. the baby was measuring 6 lbs. 7 oz.  I know that they do over estimate, but still...
  • My son was 9 lbs 6 oz and so far this baby is measuring big...it's not fun to have a big baby

  • At my 33 week ultrasound DS is measuring 5.8 lbs. But she said that it could be off by 13 oz. So who knows. The How big is my baby thing on here says that they can be between 4.2 and 5.8 so I am not that concerned but he will be alot bigger than DD who was only 6.5 at 3 days overdue!!!
  • At 35w with my daughter an ultrasound said 7 1/2lb... she was born 39w6d at 8lb 1oz. They are not very accurate, and not all babies gain that full 1/2lb a week. I wouldn't be too worried.

  • Sadly the u/s arent very accurate when it comes to estimating size. A friend of mine was estimated that her baby between 8 and 9 lbs when she was only 36 wks.  She delivered at 38 weeks and her son was 6lbs 11oz.  So dont stress too much. I'm 38 wks now (just started 39 today) and the Dr. estimated my LO to be over 6lbs at 34wks. My husband likes to 'jinx' me with a 9lb baby as I am very petite.....I dont think he's getting his wish! But we'll see. I wish you luck, and dont let it keep you up at night, just think of it this way, the bigger your baby, the more you can congratulate yourself for building it well these past nine months!

  • It's ironic that I came across this post today.   Last week the doctor estimated my baby to be about 7-8 pounds and scheduled an ultrasound because its head didn't drop far enough.   On the 12th I had my last weekly appt. and u/s. After the tech took the measurements, she said, "Oh, wow!  You are looking at an 11 pound baby!"  DH and I can't believe it.  Needless to say doc recommended a c-section.  After having no complications the entire pregnancy, we have been thrown for a loop.  I was due the 14th, and now am scheduled for a c-section on that day because they don't want the baby to get any bigger!

     BTW- no diabetes was diagnosed

Good luck to all who have "big" babies!

  • I have a friend who says she would gladly rebirth her ten pounder unmedicated than have another inducted 6 pounder.

  • Yes we are too!  At 37 weeks the growth ultrasound said the babys measurements were the gestational age over 40 weeks, and they calculated the weight to be over 9 lbs.  So needless to say that we have a C-section scheduled for the 21st...totally terrified!!!  I was 7lbs14oz and SO was 10 so i figured he/she would be bigger.

  • My LO just went down from above the 97th percentile at our 30w growth ultrasound to the 91st percentile yesterday (probably around 6.5lbs already)... at least it's progress right?  Unfortunately she hasn't started descending yet so my doctor doesn't want to talk induction until that happens, but we're definitely both concerned because I'm petite and LO is obviously on the large side.  Fingers crossed LO decides to arrive a little early since she doesn't really need that last week or so of just weight gain lol.

  • Growth scans are notoriously inaccurate and a 9.5 pounder isn't absurdly large. I bet you'll be just fine!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • this morning my baby was 7lbs 10oz.
