Aspartame give anyone else issues?

Hi ladies. I cut out drinking diet soda when I found out I was pg. and every once in awhile I will let myself have one once a week or so. Afterwards though, I think I'm notcing some...uh....bathroom issues. We'll leave it at that. Anyone else?

Re: Aspartame give anyone else issues?

  • I am extremely sensitive to all artificial sweeteners.  I will almost immediately have a migraine and my stomach will start doing cartwheels with me eventually ending up in the bathroom.  Needless to say, i stay far away from them.

  • Any of the artificial sweetners bothered my stomach before pregnancy and now I avoid them for sure.

Same here. They make me severely sick. It used to piss me off when I would ask for a Coke and someone would bring me a Diet Coke. I know the difference.

  • No issues here and I didn't give it up either, I just don't have as much each day.

  • Yes, I get horrible migraines which always result in me throwing up. I have had to avoid aspartame for the last ten years. Some people might think I am crazy, but I do not think that stuff is good for you. Funnily enough, both my parents and sisters drink diet soda like it is going out of style and have no problems. I guess some people are just more sensitive to certain chemicals.

This. Iavoid all artificial sweetners - even sugarless gum. And it's hard to find gum that isn't sugar free!

Same here. Now way I would drink that stuff while pregnant, considering the issues I had when I wasn't pregnant. It gave me headaches and I noticed a frequency in UTIs (I'm already susceptible to them) whenever I drank anything with artificial sweetener in it.

  • I'm glad you posted this because I picked up some sugar-free lifesavers yesterday (not thinking about the artificial sweeteners in it) and had about 10 pieces (don't judge).  Within 30 minutes I was cramping up and running for the bathroom, but I was ready to blame it on my dinner instead of the lifesavers.  I thought I was going to die!  I'm not sure if it's aspartame in there or some other fake sugar, but I have to throw them out when I get back to work later today.  Ugh!
  • Aspartame makes me throw up quite literally for hours if I drink even half a soda even when I'm not pg. I  drank half a Fresca last November without realizing they changed their recipe and ended up with a migraine and my head in a bucket for the next 12 hours.

    That stuff is poison.

  • If it's not TMI, are the bathroom issues more of the diarrea kind?  Is most of the aspartame you're consuming coupled with caffine?  Caffine is a diuretic, and that, coupled with all the soft tissue relaxation we all have going on may be sparking your bathroom issues.

I was (am?) a Diet Coke addict before pregnancy and have now cut it to maybe one or two a week.  I use them as a special treat when I go out.  Especially if everyone else I'm out with is drinking alcohol.  I have absolutely noticed that the affects of caffine are much stronger on me now, even with the lesser amounts found in DC as compared to coffee (which I never drank on a regular basis before).

     Hope this  helps!
