Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Does your baby do this?

G has been showing major signs of readiness for solids. I tried purees and he hated them. So, yesterday we took the BLW approach. He did great, but he has trouble getting stuff in his mouth. He got so piissed when he couldn't figure it out on his own, so I was putting the bites in his mouth. Is this ok? I know he wants the food, he's just having a hard time figuring it out and he's getting frustrated. Any tips?

DS knows that finger foods go in his mouth, but he can't get them in there yet.  They either stick to his hand or he picks them up with the wrong part of his hand.

So, I just give him bites.  I figure since I know he is getting the concept, he'll get the fine motor skills down eventually.  Our pedi said 8 months is more the age of mastering the pincer grasp.

  • This is what I do with my son. He tries to pick things up, so I always leave a few bites on his tray for him to "practice" with, but for the most part he just gets fed straight off my plate.

  • DS does this too.  Yesterday we gave him hamburger and spaghetti noodles chopped up and put it on his high chair tray.  He ended up with most of it on his shoulder becaus he would go through the action of putting it in his mouth and would miss and it would land on his shoulder.  It was pretty funny actually.

The main thing about BLW is that the baby feeds himself/herself. This helps prevent choking.

This.  Also, until they have the pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger), you should offer sticks of food that are about 2" long so there is a handle and a place to eat.  Check out my blog for some more info on BLW.
