My 6 1/2 month old is a big boy (22 lbs) who eats alot! For solids he eats:
Breakfast: 2 tbsp oatmeal and 1/2 jar of stage 2 fruit
Lunch: 2 tbsp oatmeal and the other 1/2 of the fruit container
Dinner: 2 tbsp oatmeal and 1/2 jar of stage 2 vegetable
He drinks anywhere from 30-40 oz of formula a day on top of that.
Is this too much? I know its a lot but I don't want to not feed him if he is hungry. I don't want to over feed him either. Thoughts? What does your 6 month old eat?
Re: Too much food?
Well DS is a bit older but at around 6 months he was getting 2 meals a day but ate:
breakfast- oatmeal mixed thick with 2oz of breastmilk and a full jar (2-2 1/2 oz) of homemade fruit
dinner- oatmeal and a whole jar veggie or 2 jars of veggie/fruit
and nursed 6 to 7 times a day
now he eats 2 jars at lunch too. At our 6 month check up the pedi told us to start 3 meals at around 7 months but that seemed like a lot to me too so I held off on that for a couple weeks when he started waking more frequently at night to eat. I would say as long as he is getting plenty of formula (which he obviously is) then you can feed him as much solids as he wants. I'm sure your pedi will let you know too if he is gaining weight too fast.
When our pedi found out that DD was drinking 30+ ounces of formula a day he said to increase her intake of solids. Evidentially, in his opinion that was WAY too much formula and the baby was ready for more! This was at 4.5 months for us! So, our pedi said to start giving her first foods and give her as much as she wanted. We are currently up to:
Breakfast: same as you.
Mid-morning snack: usually 1/2 container of yogurt or puffs and 2 oz formula
Lunch: one container of food (stage 2) thickened with a bit of oatmeal
Afternoon snack: 2-4 oz formula
Dinner: 1/2 to whole container of stage 2 veggies thickened with oatmeal and 1/2 container of stage 2 (or now 3) fruits or yogurt.
Evening: bottle before bed 2-6 oz.
DD weighted 17 lbs today at her 6 month appt and the doctor was pleased. She is also disliking her bottle right now (due to teething) so we're on our sippy cup more often... in case you were wondering why there is so little formula.
