Question about grocery shopping...

DH is going to be away for a few weeks so I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to work out certain things.  My biggest hang up is grocery shopping.  How do you do it with two babies?  I do have a moby.  I don't know if I'm not using it right, but both boys aren't to fond of it.  We don't live close to any friends and family, so it's pretty much just me.  I'm open to all suggestions!

Re: Question about grocery shopping...

  • Home grocery delivery!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Take 2 carts and put the babies seats in the one you push.  One in the seat part and one in the cart part,  then pull one behind you with groceries.  Or push your stroller and pull a cart.

  • My babies hated the wraps too. I couldn't wear a baby until they were about 4 months.

At that age, I used the DSNG for grocery shopping. If it was a small trip, I would put the groceries in the basket underneath and hang bags on the handle with a Mommy Hook. For large trips, I pushed the DSNG and pulled a shopping cart with groceries behind me. Just make sure to go when the store isn't packed.

  • I've pretty much taken the boys everywhere by myself and never thought of it being an issue.  I did take them to the grocery store by myself when the twins were very little, used a stroller and cart and it was a FAIL.  Now the only way I will take the boys to the grocery store by myself is if I'm only getting as much as will fit in the bottom of the stroller (which does hold quite a lot).  My best suggestion is to go more often so you can make smaller trips and just use the basket on the stroller.
  • I don't live in an area where you can shop for groceries on the internet, but if you do, I'd suggest that for starters.

If not, what I do is wear one baby - I use a beco gemini or a baby bjorn (We have a moby, but I don't trust it for long term wear. The twisting and wrapping makes me nervous.) Then I put the other baby, in the infant seat, in my cart. Not on the cart like you can at BRU or BBB, but literally in the cart, this way if anyone bumps into my cart and I'm not standing on top of it, the seat won't fall off.

I can usually get what I need for the week without running out of room. Our grocery store also offers help getting to your car and unloading groceries. I've used that once. When I haven't used it, I put the kids in the car first and then unload the groceries. I always park next to the cart returns so I don't have to leave the babies unattended when I return the cart.

  • When I do Target or Sam's alone, I just bring the stroller and use the bottom part of the stroller as my shopping cart.  I have a MoM friend who'll put one infant seat in the cart and wear the other in a Bjorn.

I saw someone using their single SNG yesterday and just putting groceries underneath.  Made me feel like I'm not a freak for doing this.

  • Ditto the PPs who mentioned home grocery delivery. We just started doing Peapod delivery, and it's great. One less errand to worry about. And, delivery is free for the first few months.
  • I park next to a cart return, put one infant seat on top and one in the main basket, and fill all around them with groceries. I try to only take one kid with me on big trips, but if I were forced to do it alone, I'd just make two smaller trips instead of one big trip each week. At places like Trader Joes with tiny carts, I use the DSNG, hold a basket, and put other stuff in my reusable bags hanging from a mommy hook. I'm not good at handling both a stroller and a cart at once.
