Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Pumping this morning and saw blood.

I was bumping and pumping, looked down to see my milk tinted pink and blood in the flange from my left breast.  I had a clogged duct on Saturday that lasted longer and hurt more than normal, but I didn't noticed any blood in LOs poo so I didn't think anything of it and knew that it would eventually pass.

I normally pump close to 8oz from the left, but today I only got about 3 and that is when I noticed the blood and stopped.  I manually expressed to see if I could tell where the blood was coming from and could not see anything on my nipple or in the milk.  I am going to wait for my next pumping session to see if it happens again and then call my Dr.

Has anyone ever had this happen?  Anyone feel up to playing doctor this morning? Stick out tongueLOL TIA!

Re: Pumping this morning and saw blood.

  • Yes.  Most likely you burst a capillary.  Usually happens when you wait too long to pump -- which would make sense if you had a clogged duct.

  • Thanks!  I am going to do some reading up on this and hopefully it does not happen again.

  • Happened to me too - a few weeks ago and then last week again. I had a clogged duct the first time too and my doc said (when I called all frantic haha) that it could have been a burst blood vessel or capillary like previous poster. Just make sure if you are feeling sick (like the flu) that you go see your doctor because it could be mastitis. Last week when I was pumping and got blood I think it was because my nipple was a little cracked. I started using Lanolin and kept the pump turned down more than usual and it feels a lot better. Everyone said that you can still give baby the milk with the blood in it. That is just tastes salty to them.

Good luck and hope you don't get anymore blood! Oh the adventures of breastfeeding haha.

  • Happened to me. Like others said, probably a broken capillary. Of note, our pediatrician told us NOT to give this milk to LO. I'm not sure it really matters (if it truly causes any problems), but that is what she said when I asked.
  • Thank you ladies, I went ahead and called my OB because I am now getting sharp shooting pains in my breast and nipple and I want to make sure I didn't do any major damage.  I was startled by the blood so I dumped the milk down the drain right after pumping.  I want to chop my left boob off it hurts so bad right now. Crying
