Method of Discipline *clicky*

So I got into a heated discussion with my brother over method of discipline this weekend.  I'll post my opinion below in a little bit, but I wanted to see what the results show.  [Poll]

DH and I grew up with very different discipline styles in our household. I was put in timeout or grounded, but if it was serious enough and I was warned enough, I got spanked. DH was never hit. I don't think an occasional spanking will scar my child, but I'd rather try other means first. I don't want him to think violence will solve anything.

SOrry- I was unaware. Not trying to stir up drama. It was a legitimate question.

I put any of the above but primarily I'm going to do what my Mom did and use creative Punishments. We'd have to clean/cut firewood/rake loose our privledges,etc. Which was much worse than a spanking to us. We all turned into good Kids who never got into much trouble so it must have worked!

We won't spank. For many reasons.

I'm on the creative punishment route. My dad would make me pull weeds or write an essay about what I'd done wrong and what I will do in the future to avoid making the same mistakes.

After spending a full summer day pulling weeds I learned my lesson. That crap was awful.

This. I shampooed rugs, cleaned the garage, stuff like that.

None of the above. With my 4 year old we use the positive reinforcement method. It is working WONDERFUL so far. His teachers said that they have never had such a well behaved child. I COULD NEVER EVER EVER spank. EVER.

I think it would depend. I'm not for "spanking" but I have learned to never say never.  My mom used to whip me as a child and beat me as a teenager when I was in trouble and I still resent her for it. I would like to believe that if I got that fed up with DS's behavior to the point of wanting to pop him, that I could walk away and take a "wooo-saaa" minute.

I don't want to use physical punishment and want to try time outs, etc. first but sometimes a quick swat on the butt to get their attention is warranted.  I'm not talking lay them bare a$$ed over my knee and spank the crap out of them.  Heck, my mom never spanked - when my sis and I got older she would thump us on top of the head.  It didn't really hurt but it got our attention!
